:: Alicia Keys recently finished shooting "Smokin' Aces", alongside Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Jeremy Piven, and Ryan Reynolds. In the film, she plays an assassin named Georgia Sykes, one of several hit men (or in this case, hit-woman) on the trail of Piven’s character. Keys has received much praise from her co-stars in the film; Ryan Reynolds said Keys has "natural" acting ability as he was surprised she had not starred in movies before. She talks to Moviehole about the film. Click here to read it, it's interesting interview.

:: BET.com users have overwhelmingly selected Alicia Keys as the 2006 Person of the Year. Retha Hill, BET.com's vice president for content, points to Keys'"tireless dedication to stopping AIDS in Africa" as the primary reason the entertainer "has won the hearts and minds of her generation. The Grammy Award-winning singer’s talent is unquestionable, but what makes her even more special is that she doesn’t hesitate to use her celebrity to back good causes, like Keep a Child Alive, and to get personally involved, as witnessed by her trip to a pediatric AIDS clinic in Kenya. Because of her talent and unceasing generosity, Alicia Keys is more than worthy of being BET's 2006 Person of The Year". Read the full story and check out some photos from Miss Keys' trip to Africa. Congratulations Alicia!

:: Miss Keys has publicly applauded Beyonce for her Golden Globe Best Actress nomination - because she feels the singer/actress could herald a new era of "triple-threat" stars. Keys, who is embarking on her own movie career, admits she grew up idolising stars who had singing, theatrical and movie careers. She says, "I can't wait to see Beyonce in Dreamgirls. From the beginning of time, many of the great artists were always triple threats. They all acted, sang and danced, they did it all. "I think, going back in that direction now, and to be able to encompass so many styles, and do it with so much class, is fantastic. "I've known Beyonce for a while. We did meet each other when we were on Columbia (record label), where they did retreats and they would show the different artists who were coming out. "We got a chance to hang out then. I think we feel the same way about being able to express ourselves. She's a great lady".

December 19, 2006
:: Alicia was stunned when she heard Bob Dylan had namechecked her in one of the songs on his acclaimed new 'Modern Times' and she's still struggling to figure out why her. Dylan mentions Keys on the song 'Thunder On The Mountain' and she has been in musical heaven ever since. She explains, "I could not believe it. The first person who told me about it was John Mayer. He said, 'You're never gonna believe this but I just heard that Dylan has your name in his song.' "I was totally not expecting it but then I couldn't wait to hear it because it wasn't coming out for a while. "It's such a big honour because Dylan's such a lyrical genius and storyteller with so much history. As a writer myself, I admire him. I thanked him greatly".

:: She'll be an assassin in "Smokin' Aces" and a best friend in "The Nanny Diaries," but with two supporting roles that hasn't reached the big screen, Alicia has yet to cast a spell on Hollywood. That might change with the singer's first lead role, as a witch in a remake of "Bell, Book and Candle." Keys can't wait to take on the part of Gillian, played by Kim Novak in the 1958 original, mostly because she relates to the more realistic side of this witch's life. Though the character is a witch, she mixes with modern society — she went to college and runs a shop in New York's Greenwich Village. But she also has a secret life that involves hanging with other witches and warlocks, mostly at jazz clubs. That "underground society" interested Keys the most, since it's "the kind of thing you never really think about." The story, a predecessor to "Bewitched," explores what happens when witches and mortals get mixed up with one another, or even accidentally fall in love. "Gillian is a young woman who feels a little out of place, like I think we all do or have at one time or another," Keys said, adding with a laugh, "or all the time. So where do you find what you're looking for? Where is the magic in your life? And where is the magic in love? And is it magic? Is love magic? It's a universal topic, and that's what I love about it". Read more.

:: Jennifer Aniston took her inspiration from the Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Alicia Keys to get her through her divorce with Brad Pitt. Jen listened to the bands while practising yoga to get her life back on track. It soothed her and let her focus on her life. She said: "I was crying through the moves but it's good to get that out. You feel like you're having therapy".

November 22, 2006
:: Alicia Keys' new web site launched Tuesday and one of the features on the way is a book club. "I always loved the way Oprah did that. To do that with my style and the books I like to read would be really fly." Keys plans to start the group with "The Temple of My Familiar" a novel by Alice Walker. "She is insane, in the best way, when it comes to writing. There's something about a book that engages you, when you become enraptured in the whole thing like it's your life and you're yelling at the book." Keys also plans to recommend the W.E.B. DuBois novel "The Souls of Black Folk," which she just finished recently. "I love to read. It makes you write better, and I just want to open that conversation up, to talk about many things, many styles".

:: Who is the best Bond? "I would have to choose Sean Connery" said Alicia who plays an assassin in her film debut, Smokin' Aces. "He's so gentlemanly, and he just has a presence." Still, she holds out for a choice that's bound to stir up even more controversy than Craig, because of age and race. "If it were up to me," she laughed, "Morgan Freeman would be the next Bond."

:: If Alicia Keys has her way, her next album is going to rock. "It's coming together crazy," she said of her in-the-works LP. "In fact, the people I am collaborating with are people I love. Their style isn't exactly my style, but a merging of those worlds." Does that mean she's teamed up with Queens of the Stone Age, the White Stripes, John Mayer or John Legend (all folks that she said she'd like to work with)? "About three of those names have already come together". Which three? "I'm not telling you!" she sang back as a taunt. Keys' album is due next spring.

:: Celebrities and ordinary Americans will help turn the first shovels of dirt Monday for a memorial honoring Martin Luther King Jr. It will be the first monument to an African American on the National Mall. President Bush is scheduled to make remarks at the groundbreaking. Poet and novelist Maya Angelou is scheduled to join Oprah Winfrey and others who have been working for more than a decade to help build the monument. Other invited guests include former President Bill Clinton, Russell Simmons, Alicia Keys and Muhammad Ali. The four-acre site along the Tidal Basin is located near the steps to the Lincoln Memorial, where King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963. So far, donations for the project have topped $65 million. Officials say $100 million is needed to build and maintain the memorial. Project organizers hope to have the memorial completed by the spring of 2008.

:: Alicia Keys joined David Bowie for a neo soul-injected take on the latter's "Changes" to close out a star-studded New York benefit Thursday for the Keep a Child Alive organization. Keys, who serves as the charity's ambassador, acted as musical director for the event at Hammerstein Ballroom, sharing the stage with not only Bowie, but also Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Angelique Kidjo. The black-tie dinner, hosted by comedian Wanda Sykes and Bowie's wife, Iman, also included a brief performance by San Diego rock band Louis XIV, a poem from Saul Williams and appearances by hip-hop czar Russell Simmons and actors Jeffrey Wright, Ed Norton and Elijah Wood. Earlier in the evening, Keys was seen in a video filmed in Africa visiting a KACA clinic, talking to teens and young adults who've lost their parents to AIDS and are now the heads of their own households. She brought three of the children out onstage, fulfilling one's wish to meet Wood, the star of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Keys, whose mini-set included a commanding rendition of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" and versions of Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings" and Bob Marley's "War," joined the younger Marley for his hit "Welcome to the Jamrock," for which she sang the hook: "Out in the streets, they call it murder." Marley also performed "Road to Zion." Bowie performed a three-song set that also included "Fantastic Voyage," and Kidjo delivered her fiery version of Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." Kidjo and Keys performed a new duet, "Djin Djin," that they've recorded for the former's forthcoming debut on indie label Razor & Tie.

:: Alicia Keys' band has been practicing a bridge between David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and Keys' "Karma" for a half-hour to the point where they seem like one song. Keys nods her head to the beat, giving her approval to the proposed medley for her performance at the Black Ball, Keep A Child Alive's annual fundraiser in New York on Thursday. "David Bowie is in the show," Keys said, "so we're singing together. But the song you just heard, we may or may not do. I figured, while he's there, why not [do a duet]?". Also joining Keys onstage will be Damien Marley, Angelique Kidjo and Louis XIV, who've all signed on to help Keys turn this annual event into a million-dollar fundraiser to help AIDS orphans in Africa. Interspersed between the performances will be film clips of the singer's recent trip to Africa, where she visited clinics in Durban, South Africa, and Kampala, Uganda. "You go and you experience it, and you really feel what's happening and what we're doing, how you help by just being there. You feel a connection to it," Keys said. "And then musically, it's the bringing together of a whole world of people that you will probably never see on the same stage ever again". Read more on Mtv.com. I've put pics from rehearsals here.

:: This photo supplied by Keep A Child Alive shows Alicia Keys with children of the Agape orphanage in Durban, South Africa, in early summer 2006. Keep A Child Alive is constructing a building to house children who have lost all of their known relatives to AIDS. Keys, who is hosting her annual Black Ball concert Thursday, November 9, 2006, to benefit the charity, says criticism of celebrities involved in African causes is not only unfair, but does a disservice to those in Africa who need the help.

November 6, 2006
:: As more celebrities get involved in helping African nations overcome debt, AIDS and poverty, some cynics have questioned whether their motives are spurred by good intentions or publicity - most notably, with Madonna's recent trip to Malawi to adopt a child. Alicia Keys, who is hosting her annual Black Ball charity concert in New York City on Thursday, says such criticism is unfair and a disservice to those in Africa who need help. "I think that's horrible, and I think that really degrades and tries to discourage people who do have a voice, who do have power, who do have money, who do have the ability to reach out to people and get involved in situations. I think if you make a choice to do something positive, that shouldn't be diminished. I think that takes away from what's actually going on". Keys, who has been involved in African causes for years, said celebrities have been in the forefront of charitable and political causes, and that's how it should be. She also said celebrities have helped direct attention to the problems in many African nations. "I do think that it has become more on people's radars, whereas before it kind of came across as, 'Oh, it's so far away,'" she said. "It's really positive to know that it is a global community." Keys, who visited Africa earlier this year, said the problems that beset some countries can seem insurmountable, but she's seen how charity can save lives. "That's why when I speak and I use my voice, I like to emphasize the way that everyday people like you and me ... can really be a huge hero," she said. "If you don't do anything else in your life, if you can save one life - one life? It's amazing. Imagine saving 10 or 20 or 50 or 100".

November 3, 2006
:: These days, it seems like a director can't even go and make a movie about gun-toting hookers, drug-dealing gangsters and pop-culture-riffing hitmen without being branded a Quentin Tarantino rip-off. But in-demand writer/director Joe Carnahan wants to make one thing abundantly clear: "Smokin' Aces" is not a Tarantino film... "Alicia is a 26-year-old kid; we forget how young she is," Carnahan said, admitting that he took a bit of a risk in casting her as a world-weary assassin. "You can see in her eyes that she's an old soul. You look at her and you can tell that she's been here before. She was playing at the Paramount in Oakland and I drove up there to see her," Carnahan remembered of his pitch, which he made after her representatives put out the word that the Grammy winner was looking to explore an acting career. "I watched her show, which was fantastic, and I went backstage ... I sat down and talked to her, and I said, 'They are going to come to you with some jerk-off romantic comedy. Don't do it. Read this instead!' Well, she had read it at that point, and said, 'Wow, it's really intense,' and I said, 'Yeah, so, do you want to shake things up?'". Shaking it up would be one way to describe Keys' performance, as soulful as any song she's ever sung — but spiced up with an undercover hooker outfit, lesbian love affair (with Henson's character) and one very, very enormous gun. Read the whole story on Mtv.com.

:: The New York Times Best Sellers list and other best seller lists are often the home of celebrity books. Most of the time, fans go out and support their favorite celebrity by buying their books without knowing a bit of anything about how good the book is. However, there are times when our favorite famous faces produce thought provoking books. Recording artists Alicia Keys, Jill Scott and Ashanti all released heart felt poetry collections that sold very well for poetry books, since poetry does not have a high demand in the book industry. 9x Grammy Award winning singer, song writer, producer, and poet, Alicia Keys released "Tears for Water" in 2004. Keys took a different approach in this book, combining poems that she says she never intended on sharing with lyrics for songs that appeared on her two multi-platinum albums "Songs in A Minor" and "The Diary of Alicia Keys" and putting them in her book. According to Publishers Weekly "With their themes of loneliness, confusion, wonder and desire, most of Keys' free-verse poems could be the cris de coeur of any American 20-something." Keys volume of poetry made it to New York Times Best Sellers List. Fans all over the world love their favorite celebrities and artists and will continue to support them, even if they step away from their usual occupation to pursue other goals These books embody heart felt poetry from true singers. You can buy 'Tears for Water' at Amazon.

:: Alicia Keys is a singer, songwriter and a nine-time Grammy winner who has taken the continent of Africa into her heart in a very big way. Through her involvement with the organization Keep A Child Alive, Alicia learned that in some cases an African child who has HIV can be helped with as little as $1 a day. With the proper medication and treatment, AIDS-infected adults can also live longer, fuller lives. After celebrating with patients who have been helped by Keep A Child Alive donations, Alicia visited a family who lives in the slums of Mombasa. Alicia says she was overwhelmed when she met Sudi, a young man who was born with HIV and didn't receive proper medication until he was 14 years old. At 17, Sudi stood less than four feet tall. "Nothing really prepared me for seeing Sudi and seeing his family," she says. About a week after Alicia left Kenya, Sudi passed away. "If we knew him when he was 3 and were able to start [treatment], he would still be alive today," Alicia says. "You can totally turn a person's life around by providing this medicine. It's the simplest thing to save a life. Every one, single person can be a hero for a dollar a day". Check a few pics from the show and read more here.

:: Nickelodeon's preschool-targeted series "The Backyardigans" features animated characters who bound around their back yards, singing, dancing and imagining themselves on adventures of every stripe. A week of new episodes rolls out Oct. 16, and tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. the Backyardigans go on a "Mission to Mars" in a new episode that features R&B singer Alicia Keys as the voice of a Mommy Martian. (The episode will be out on DVD Tuesday). Janice Burgess created "Backyardigans" after a successful stint working as a Nickelodeon executive in the network's preschool division, Nick Jr. Q: How did you land Alicia Keys for the role of Mommy Martian in the season premiere? "I have to thank Nickelodeon Talent for that. It's a fabulous talent department, and they were able to pitch it to Alicia in a way that made her want to do it. She doesn't take herself too seriously, and she has a playful side. She doesn't mind singing, "Everything's boinga here." Her niece was able to be the voice of the little teeny alien, so it was fun for the whole family" Janice said. Don't forget to watch it tommorow!

:: When popular international performers come to Jamaica their presence can have a positive impact on Jamaican music, as links can be further strengthened and their level of expertise and insight passed on. Baby Cham's Ghetto Story, which was a huge hit locally, has been propelled onto the international stage as Alicia Keys has decided to tell her version of a ghetto story. But, Keys' version is not the only remix to Ghetto Story because Baby Cham alsohas a version with Akon. But then, Akon is not as popular as Alicia Keys. Keys' remix has been getting huge airplay on New York's urban station Hot 97. However, Ghetto Story's heavy rotation on New York radio is not new for a Jamaican song. Every year, New York radio adds a Jamaican song to its play list, rotates it regularly while the rest of America hardly notices. Last summer, I Wayne's Can't Satisfy Her got huge airplay in the 'Big Apple' but never became a hit in the rest of the country. But, Ghetto Story has been somewhat different. Although not exactly radio-friendly because of its violent content, Alicia Keys' addition to the song has further pushed its popularity in the United States. Read the whole article here.
