:: Grammy-winning soul star Alicia Keys is eyeing a role as a ruthless assassin alongside Ben Affleck, in a new action comedy called 'Smokin' Aces.' The Fallin' singer is also expected to star alongside Ryan Reynolds and Jeremy Piven in the movie, which will be directed by film-maker Joe Carahan. In 'Smokin' Aces', Reynolds will play an FBI agent masterminding a manhunt for Piven's loudmouthed stand-up comedian character. With the comic making plans to testify against the mafia, Keys and a collection of fellow hired killers seek to cash in on the contract on his life, reports MTV News. Keys recently signed a deal portray piano player Philippa Schuyler in Halle Berry's film based on the book Compositions In Black And White.

:: Miami is about to get a whole lot hotter. That's because two of music's most sizzling commodities — 50 Cent and Coldplay — have been added to the star-studded roster of performers gracing the stage at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, the channel announced Monday (August 15). Also announced Monday was the latest batch of artists handing out the coveted Moonmen. Jessica Simpson, Lil Kim, Ricky Martin, Ashlee Simpson, Bow Wow, Eva Longoria, Nelly, Hilary Duff, Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, Ciara and Alicia Keys will join previously announced appearances by Usher, Jessica Alba, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, Joss Stone, Jeremy Piven and Snoop Dogg, while Diddy will take over this year's hosting duties. More announcements regarding performers and appearances are expected in the coming days and weeks leading up to the live August 28 broadcast.

:: After several false starts, Joe Carnahan may be close to directing his first film since "Narc." According to Variety, Carnahan is hoping to helm his own script for "Smokin' Aces" with a proposed October start date. The trade paper reports that Ryan Reynolds, Jeremy Piven and, of all people, Alicia Keys make up Carnahan's dream cast. Ben Affleck may also be in line for a supporting role. Reynolds would play an FBI agent searching for a comedian/low-level mobster (Piven). The comic is on the verge of naming names on his organized crime buddies, but he decides to hit Lake Tahoe for a weekend of gambling fun first. Unfortunately, several people want him dead, including an assassin possibly played by Keys. Since earning critical attention for 2002's "Narc," Carnahan has taken his time looking for the right follow-up. The director flirted with "Mission Impossible 3" and an adaptation of "Killing Pablo."

:: It's a trend that gives new meaning to the term "music mix". It's called "mash-up" music and you can hear it on the radio, the internet or someone's mp3 player. It's taking two different songs - and mixing them together. One popular one these days is the blend of Alicia Keys' vocals for her song "Karma" with the music track for the song "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder. Wyclef Jean of the Fugees says mash-ups are more than just a fad. He says it's a taste of things to come, musically.

:: Usher has topped a new poll to find the most powerful voice in pop music in 2005. The R&B star beat Alicia Keys, Coldplay and Eminem to claim the top spot in the Los Angeles Times Pop Power List, after industry bigwigs including producers Jermaine Dupri and Rick Rubin and rap mogul Russell Simmons were asked to cast their votes. One of the 21 music bosses on the panel of judges, who remained nameless, insisted Britney Spears didn't deserve to be on the new Power List because "she's over", while another suggested her pop rival Christina Aguilera didn't make the list because she's "too volatile". The full top 10 is: Usher, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Eminem, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Outkast, 50Cent, Kanye West, Dr Dre.

:: If anyone could get MTV to bring "Unplugged" out of retirement, it would be Alicia Keys, who just taped her installment of the series last week in New York. She says it was a dream come true, and she can't believe she's about to be in the same company as Eric Clapton, Nirvana and Mariah Carey. "As a child, in my wildest dreams - and I dreamed so big - but you never think it's going to happen," Keys said. "So to be here, on the set that we're going to record 'Unplugged' on, it's amazing and beautiful and everything I've ever dreamed of. 'Unplugged' is my thing, it's really my style, it's what I'm all about," she added. "When I first started playing anywhere, it was on a little cheesy keyboard in a small, nasty hotel dive, and even though I didn't have a beautiful 9-foot Yamaha piano, there was a certain energy that comes with an intimate space. I really loved it." Keys says she also loved dreaming up brand-new arrangements for well-loved - but well-worn - tunes such as "A Woman's Worth" and "Heartburn," as well as a few choice covers. "To have strings, to have percussion, to have all these elements to put in the piano base that I have, this is so much fun, man," she enthused. "When my drums do come in - a lot of times they don't, it's just about the percussion — but when they do, it's about using the brushes and keeping it calm and cool for a minute." Creating a feeling as if everyone was gathered around the piano in her living room, "just chilling," was important, she said, so that the audience could feel like her extended family. "It's about the personal feel, as opposed to a big huge rocking-out crazy three-hour show," she said. "It's about speaking to the audience." Read the whole article on Mtv.com.

:: The funeral service for eight-time Grammy winner Luther Vandross hit just the right notes Friday: soulful, joyful and powerful, an echo of the late singer's unforgettable voice. Family, friends and fans filled The Riverside Church for a celebration of Vandross' too-short life, a memorial service that morphed into a revival meeting before ending with an all-star rendition of his hit single "Power of Love/Love Power." Vandross' wide appeal was evident in the first few rows of mourners, where current hit-makers Usher and Alicia Keys shared space with music legends Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. Vandross, 54, died July 1 at a New Jersey hospital, two years after he suffered a debilitating stroke. He sold more than 25 million records in his long career. Read the whole article here.

:: While it seemed like Alicia Keys' Diary was never going to end, the songstress is finally turning to new material. The 24-year-old Keys had extended her Diary Tour through the end of June and kept the limelight on her sophomore release when she won Best Female R&B Artist at the 2005 BET Awards earlier this week. But Keys is hardly stagnating. Now at home in New York, the R&B singer is ready to get back into the recording studio. She's currently prepping her forthcoming unplugged album, which will include Diary songs as well as a few new tracks. "I'm creating about three or four new songs, and I'm really excited about putting that together," Keys said. "I'm going to tape it in July and it's going to be released in October. One of the tracks is kind of classic me. Another one is like a fusion of blues-rock and soul. It's crazy! And the other one I'm thinking of doing is this particular remake that I'm not going to tell you about yet, because I don't want to say it and then it doesn't happen." Following that project, she'll start recording her third studio album. But Keys has a few more irons in the fire, including a second book, which will be the follow-up to 2004's "Tears for Water." While she previously said the book will be strictly autobiographical, now she's saying it might have a slightly different bent. "It'll be a more fiction-based book," she explained. "It'll be based on my life, but I want to turn it into a more fictitious character. I love the written word so much, I know it's gonna flow naturally." The wheels are starting to turn on Keys' biopic, too, in which she'll portray 1950s biracial piano prodigy Phillipa Schuyler. "Halle developing the film, and it's in its screenwriting phase right now," she said. "It takes a minute for movies, you know?". Click here to watch short interviews with Alicia on Mtv.com.

:: Miss Keys may be a multi-millionairess - but she still does her own laundry. She is determined to lead as close to normal a life as possible, despite her jet-setting and hectic career. Keys tells website PageSix.com, Yeah, I've won nine Grammys, but I know what it's like to live here and have nothing. "My mother struggled bringing me up. We lived in this tiny, tiny apartment. My first 16 years of life I didn't even have a bedroom. But when I come home off that tour I'm like everybody else. Tomorrow I look forward to doing my laundry. Yeah. I do my own laundry. I like doing things that make me feel normal. I'll do some movies, check any zit I might have gotten on my face, do laundry and go for a walk without make-up. One person, staring at me walking on the street, said to her friend, 'Look at that girl trying to look like Alicia Keys".

While other artists were thinking about fighting poverty and starvation, Keys took a moment for soul star Vandross, who died on Friday night. "This might be the last life of thousands of people thousands of miles away, just like it was the last breath for our brother and friend Mr Luther Vandross just last night."

:: Every single day, 30,000 children die, needlessly, of extreme poverty. 8 world leaders, gathered in Scotland for the G8 summit, will be presented with a workable plan to double aid, drop the debt and make the trade laws fair. If these 8 men agree, then we will become the generation that made poverty history. But they'll only do it if enough people tell them to. That's why we're staging LIVE 8. 10 concerts, 100 artists, a million spectators, 2 billion viewers, and 1 message... To get those 8 men, in that 1 room, to stop 30,000 children dying every single day of extreme poverty. We don't want your money - we want you!

:: By the time Alicia Keys was 17, she was already an accomplished pianist and singer with a recording contract. But even with all of her talents, Keys says she could have benefited from some mentoring — "to have a place that you can go to, for people to reach out to you and say, 'Here's how I did it, or here's what I think.'" With that in mind, Keys is lending her support to the Florida-based mentoring group Frum Tha Ground Up, which helps children ages 13 to 18 become self-motivated and reach their potential. Keys is providing some of the items for an online auction to benefit the group, including VIP passes to her performance at the upcoming Essence Music Festival in New Orleans and a chance to be her guest while she tapes her Unplugged album next month. Bidding ends June 30. Read more.

The producer was the last person to work with Miles on his 1991 Doo-Bop album before Miles became ill. The producer, who has worked with the likes of Notorious B.I.G. and Alicia Keys, is looking to get some of hip-hop’s finest to collaborate on a tribute album for the jazz legend. "It's not just about remixing, it's about making something that means something," Easy said to MTV. "Everyone connected would have to have a [musical] connection to Miles. Alicia. I could see Mos Def fitting in. Jill Scott. Or I would give anything to work with D'Angelo." Read more.

:: Alicia Keys has been touring for a few years now, but her Cotton Club-like tour rolls to an end in Las Vegas this weekend. And for this special occasion, Keys says she is planning three sprawling shows at the MGM Grand Garden arena. "Beyond it being this incredible, transporting, mind-blowing, conceptually-driven, 1930s, Cotton Club-kind of style, I also have a 36-piece orchestra that's gonna be with me. And we're gonna do all these arrangements of these songs - kind of a la big-band style - as well as classics, as well as my songs," she says. "It's so incredible. It's so fun. And this is gonna be probably the only time you'll ever see it in this way ever." Keys says she's filming these rare symphonically-enhanced shows either in Las Vegas or in Los Angeles, the only two cities to get this treatment. "When it says, 'A Special Evening,' it's really a special thing." She chose Vegas for the splashy finale for good reasons, she says. "It just seems so appropriate, and I feel like it will be like something unforgettable and classy. When you do the MGM, you're gonna do it all the way. We're gonna go out with a bang." :: Alicia Keys reportedly carries her 'green blanket' (from Banana Republic) whenever she is away from her home because it smells like her house. According to the report, the Grammy-winner never forgets to pack her blanket each time she goes out on tour, as it makes her feel comfortable and at-home in an alien-surrounding. "It smells like my house. Familiar scents are nice."Sometimes you check in (at a hotel) and the room smells smoky and stuff. You have to air it out and get your own thing going on".

:: Keys' Changes. And so the franchise begins. At a time when other stars of her generation are looking for new ways to cash in on their celebrity, is it any surprise that somebody as talented, attractive and all-around appealing as Alicia Keys would venture outside of music to pursue creative outlets? Keys plans on shooting the first of what she hopes will be many feature film roles in her career, as well as authoring several books, including a novel loosely based on her journal entries. And that's just for starters. "I'm sure she's going to go venturing into construction soon or perhaps... a cheese-steak stand," quipped Zena Burns, music editor at Teen People, which features Keys in its June/July "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" issue. "She is SO versatile that she can do anything." Keys, herself, hasn't any doubt about it. Attaining pop-music stardom was just the start for the 25-year-old singer who is nearing the end of a very long tour in support of 2003's triple-platinum album "The Diary of Alicia Keys." The tour brings her to the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday for a show that she promises will be "phenomenal from beginning to end Read the whole article in here.

:: Alicia Keys' voice is like buttah. Just hearing her answer questions is therapy for the ears, even if the Grammy golden girl isn't singing. Recently named the hottest person under 25 by Teen People, Keys swings by the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on Tuesday and Wednesday for performances on her extended tour. The Mercury News caught up with her by phone.
Q: How do you maintain your soothing voice?
A: I've come up with a nice regimen that really works for me. I really don't talk much on the days of shows. A lot of time, I'll walk about with a pad of paper and just write everything down. I drink a lot of herbal teas that have very healing throat properties to them. I don't do a lot of extra things the night before a show. I really take it easy so that I can be at my best. This show, in particular, takes a lot out of me. It's very intricate. There's a lot going on. It's a whole time-travel, transportation, 1930s feeling, so I really have to get my mind completely right for it, have my energy up, up, up.
Q: In your concert with Beyoncé and Missy, you danced. Is there going to be more of that?
A: It's definitely movement, but it's free, more like freedom within the movement, kind of portraying this time in the period of the '30s in the Cotton Club kind of era.
Q: A lot of people were surprised when you came out from behind the piano in that show.
A: Definitely. I like to surprise people. I will do it for my entire life.
Q: How would you describe your personality?
A: Free-spirited, kind, impatient. (She laughs.) Strong, definitely very giving. I like people to be happy, and I like to be happy, as well.

:: Alicia Keys has been on tour forever - or at least since she released her last album, the wildly successful "Diary of Alicia Keys", way back in 2003. The R&B singer-songwriter-pianist swept up four Grammy Awards earlier this year, to add to the five she won with her breakthrough 2001 debut, "Songs in A Minor," and has been through the Bay Area several times since hitting the road. But she's coming back again - to the Paramount Theatre in Oakland for a pair of shows on Tuesday and Wednesday - just before the tour finally wraps up at the end of the month in Las Vegas. We spoke to her by phone from Atlantic City.
Q: How long have you been on tour?
A: A hundred thousand years. And I still love it.
Q: No way.
A: I do. I really, really do.
Q: That's impossible. You must be miserable.
A: There's just always something that's helping take it to the next place, so that's why it's still exciting.
Q: Assuming you remember anything from the past two years, what was the best part?
A: I have to say I'm fortunate that a lot of good things happened. One of them was definitely being able to perform with Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz. I just looked to my left and my right and couldn't believe who was there.

:: Saturday night in Santa Barbara, California, Oprah Winfrey gave a party that'll be talked about for years to come. Actually it was a lavish tribute to pioneering black women including Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack, Ruby Dee, Della Reese, Diahann Carroll and Diana Ross. The honorees received secret, hand-embroidered invitations to join Winfrey for what she called "A Bridge to Now" celebration that began Friday with a luncheon at her nearby Montecito estate. The very generous hostess strolled down the silver carpet to the Legends Ball in a red Vera Wang gown at the Bacara Resort and Spa by the sea On Friday night, Winfrey hooked up the new jacks with their older counterparts at a party at her home. Among those attending that affair were Ashanti, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys and Patti LaBelle, who said, "There was nobody hating on nobody." Keys, by the way, confirmed that she has been asked by Winfrey to play Lena Horne (one of the weekend's absentee legends) in a biopic Winfrey will produce, reports USA Today. Read more.

:: Magnificent Alicia Keys pours heart and neo-soul into concert. Labels such as "throwback", "old-school" and "retro" don't do Alicia Keys justice. Where the Maxwells and Musiq Soulchilds of pop music fall over themselves to sound vintage, Alicia Keys recalls the majesty of Aretha and Stevie by the mere power of her melodies and the tightness of her arrangements. Her performance last night at the Agganis Arena further demonstrated her reign over the neo-soul pack. A 1930s Harlem Cotton Club theme set the tone of the evening, the set designed in all white, with the band sporting vintage swing-era costumes. But the nostalgia theme wasn't reserved for the visuals: The arrangement of the opening tune, the current r&b single "Karma" was given a big-band jazz makeover. Read the whole article here.

:: Alicia Keys has grown up fast - maybe too fast. When a 21-year-old Keys played the Orpheum Theatre in 2002, her stage looked like an urban apartment house complete with a stoop to sit on. Instead of ''Jenny From the Block," this was Alicia from the block, and it felt very real since she was raised in a working-class neighborhood in New York City. Since then, Keys has won nine Grammys and become a glitzy diva, as suggested by her stage set Wednesday at the sold-out Agganis Arena. The theme of the show was ''Saturday Night Uptown," and the stage featured a chandelier, an eight-piece band dressed in white tuxedos, a plush lounge chair for her to flop on, costume changes that included an evening gown, and a large poster advertising Cab Calloway at the Cotton Club back in the '30s.
