This year, Keys has been nominated in a host of categories, including Album of the Year, for The Diary of Alicia Keys, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Most of those who attended - including Alicia Keys, Pharrell Williams, Julia Stiles, Lenny Kravitz and others - got to dress themselves by picking out gowns from Cavalli's showroom, save for Keys, who chose a more subtle suede jacket. December 5, 2004
:: Here is great story written by Roger Friedman from Fox News: Alicia Keys Goes for Superstardom. There's no two ways about it: By the time she finished her extraordinary charity show on Wednesday night, Alicia Keys had taken her career to a new level. She's only 23, so maybe we're not properly appreciating the talent of this beautiful young woman who seems able to play anything and sing anything in her own style. She imitates no one, but evokes about 40 years of pop and R&B with unerring taste. She also speaks and dresses nicely — and has a nice mother too. A recent visit to Africa exposed Keys to a charity called Keep a Child Alive - which has the dubious tag line of "Be a Drug Pusher," meaning providing AIDS drugs to ill Africans. Wednesday's show, dramatically staged at a former German-Jewish synagogue on the Lower East Side, was designed around Keys to raise money and awareness for the cause. It was the same day that Keys, who's awaiting a slew of Grammy nominations next week, received 13 nominations from the Billboard Awards for her "Diary of Alicia Keys" album. "What's with that?" she asked rhetorically after the show. "There aren't even 13 songs on the album!". With unusual aplomb and confidence for a person of this age (not to mention talent), Keys demonstrated what a real musical icon used to be about. There is no midriff-baring, lip-synching, scantily clad dancers or dry-ice cloud billowing around her. Just a rocking nine-piece band, three cool backup singers and a lot of soul. Keys' show was just over an hour, but it was quality over quantity. She performed her hit, "If I Ain't Got You," and a robust version of Marvin Gaye's "Save the Children." The latter, from Gaye's "What's Going On" album, is not easily done and rarely heard live. But Keys — who you could almost call a young, female Isaac Hayes - pulled it off, knowing she was making history. As the show progressed, Keys - wearing a red leather jacket, a tight black skirt and killer pumps — alternated her turns at the piano to simply singing. She has become a virtuoso at both. She brought in Babyface for a duet on John Lennon's "Imagine" that was so achingly beautiful it should be released as a single immediately. With Kravitz, she executed Curtis Mayfield's "Little Child Runnin' Wild" perfectly and with Hamilton she also paid tribute to Mayfield with "People Get Ready." It's kind of breathtaking to imagine what Alicia Keys will be like 10 years from now. The musicianship, the poise, the range - all are just beginning to flourish. Let's just hope that it doesn't go to her head, or that she doesn't find her own Bobby Brown. In the meantime: Bravo!
:: Eleven years and one week after he made his debut on the Billboard Hot 100, Snoop Dogg scores his first No. 1. "Drop It Like It's Hot" pushes "My Boo" by Usher and Alicia Keys out of the way to become the 11th song to advance to pole position in 2004.

:: Today marks the 17th annual World AIDS Day, and Alicia Keys is urging people to get involved in the fight against the deadly disease. Along with headlining various benefit concerts to raise awareness and money to treat AIDS, Keys is working with Keep A Child Alive, a non-profit group that provides life-saving medicine to children and families with HIV and AIDS. Avril Lavigne, Nelly, Good Charlotte, Rod Stewart, Josh Groban and Cher are also involved with the organization. Last week, Keys wrote an open letter asking others to take action to stop AIDS. The letter appeared in Billboard magazine last Friday and portions of it can be read here. Writes Keys, "The disease is more than a humanitarian catastrophe; it is a moral crisis that is beginning to destroy whole countries." She adds, "I believe this should be as important as the war on terrorism; as important as rebuilding impoverished countries like Afghanistan or Iraq; as important as peace in the Middle East. This should be as important as if our own daughters and sons were dying." Keys feels that even one person can make a difference in the battle against AIDS. "We ALL need to get involved," she writes. "Otherwise, we'll be known as the generation with everything except compassion." For more information on HIV/AIDS or to make a donation, visit the following Web sites: Keep a Child Alive, Artists Against AIDS Worldwide, AIDS Org, DATA.

:: Alicia Keys lent her star power to the AIDS cause Monday by taking part in the city's first Urban Aids concert and awareness campaign. She joined Stephen Lewis, the UN's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, to raise funds for women and children living with the disease. "I know the numbers. I know the tragedies. I've seen it. It's changed my life completely," said the New Yorker at a media conference in advance of her concert later Monday evening. "I come here with so much excitement because it excites me to be part of things that are going to evoke change and are really going to have an effect on people directly." Keys was to be joined on stage by some of Canada's most popular urban acts: pop star Nelly Furtado, Ottawa teen singer Keshia Chante, Toronto rapper K-OS and Vancouver-based hip hop group Swollen Members. Organizers hope to make the concert an annual event. "The concert is in the grand tradition of these memorable musical events which galvanize public attention and raise awareness and consciousness.. it goes right back to the Live Aid concerts of the 1980s in response to the Ethiopian famine," said Lewis, who worked closely with Keys at a congressional hearing in Washington earlier this year. Figures from the United Nations suggest there are close to 40 million HIV/AIDs infections in the world, with over 25 million in Africa alone. Proceeds from the concert are being donated to Lewis's charity group, the Stephen Lewis Foundation and Keep A Child Alive, for which Keys is a spokeswoman.

:: Alicia Keys is calling on her peers in the music industry to raise their voices to help millions suffering from AIDS in Africa. "Just for a moment imagine the media hysteria and global outrage if 25 million Americans, many of them children, died from a treatable disease because the medicine was too costly," Keys writes in a commentary published in Friday's issue of Billboard magazine. "Imagine if another 42 million people were infected and had no hope of paying for life-saving treatment. This is exactly what is happening throughout sub-Saharan Africa." Keys, who recently traveled to Africa, noted that UNAIDS estimates 100 million people will be infected with the AIDS virus by the end of this decade, and that fewer than 1 percent of Africans with AIDS have access to antiretroviral treatment that has greatly improved the lives of AIDS patients in Western countries. The disease is more than a humanitarian catastrophe; it is a moral crisis that is beginning to destroy whole countries," she wrote. "I believe this should be as important as the war on terrorism; as important as rebuilding impoverished countries like Afghanistan or Iraq; as important as peace in the Middle East. This should be as important as if our own daughters and sons were dying." To that end, Keys encourages support of Keep a Child Alive, which has established treatment programs in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and Rwanda. Other recording stars affiliated with the group include Rod Stewart, Good Charlotte, Cher, Nelly, Josh Groban and Avril Lavigne. Keys will headline the Pusher's Ball on Dec. 1 (World AIDS Day), a gala fundraiser for the organization in New York, which will also feature Roy Ayers, Babyface, Common, Anthony Hamilton, Angelique Kidjo, Lenny Kravitz, Mos Def, Lou Reed, Angie Stone and "a surprise guest." Tickets for the event at the Angel Orsanz Center range from $250 to VIP sponsorships of $50,000.

:: Alicia Keys has been known for her deep lyrics and soulful voice since she burst onto the stage in 2001. She tells Correspondent Charlie Rose that she sometimes hears her own voice in her head while she's performing. "I'm very into what I do and many times as a performer, when I'm playing, I hear - this sounds strange, but I'm going to tell you - I hear voices in my head," says Keys. Rose's interview with Keys will be broadcast on 60 Minutes on Nov. 24, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Following are excerpts from Rose's report. Stevie Wonder on Keys: "Before I met her, I felt that what I was hearing in her voice was in her heart -- that's important. You can sing well, you can play well, but the key is that you can feel her heart in it." Wonder on Keys' Hit Song, "Fallin'": "What made it great was it was saying a very simple message. You can't stop wanting to hear that message...I felt it was going to be Song of the Year but worried that it was too simple, but everyone got it." Keys on Changing Her Name: "We were searching for a good description, you know? A description of who I am and what I do and we came up with a whole bunch of really bad names...The worst was - this is bad, this is horrible - Alicia Wild...I mean, that sounds like a stripper." Keys on Her Relationship with Columbia Records: "I wanted to be like a Marvin Gaye. I wanted to be like Prince. I wanted to be like Roberta Flack...After they completely trampled on me and just stepped on me and rubbed their dirty feet on me, like, 'You suck,' I said, 'Well, fine then. Then we're not on the same page and I don't suck. You suck and I'm going to go somewhere where somebody likes me".
:: I know that you can't download some of the videos, but I'm working on it. Also I will add videos from VMAs very soon. Please be patient.

:: Alicia is now featured on the studio walls of Ellen DeGeneres' chat show, after noticing her image had been left out. DeGeneres has decorated the corridor walls of her studio with pictures of the stars who have appeared on her programme in the past, so Keys was offended when she realised her guest spot had not been captured along with the many stars who were remembered. So when Keys returned to DeGeneres' show earlier this week she voiced her concerns, prompting DeGeneres to unveil a snapshot of the pair kickboxing together the following day. The picture was revealed during a special ceremony by California's Los Alamitos High School varsity cheerleading team 2 days ago.

My sister Kasia watched it and wrote down some questions that Alicia was asked, so here they are: Cat Deeley asked Alicia if assuming the world peace was sorted, what would she wanted for Xmas. Alicia replied she'd like her bed :) Another question for Alicia was: after hearing you rapping on my boo will it be on your next album? Alicia said that she would see. Cat Deeley's next question was: Is it true that you're doing a movie with Halle Berry? Alcia replied: Yes we both were involved in it from the beginning and Halle is co-producing it. It's still in the writing stage, but I am very excited about it. I've added hq pics from the show, Alicia and Usher performed 'My Boo'. Enjoy!

:: Alicia Keys is urging fellow American celebrities to follow in her footsteps and sponsor HIV positive children in Africa. The multi award-winning artist, who sponsors two children and two women through the charity organisation 'Keep a Child Alive,' says that she is very happy with the progress that these AIDS patients have made and she wants others to know how simple it is to make a difference. "I also sponsor two mothers, Anne and Veronica. Before Keep A Child Alive came to the clinic, no one had access to treatment. I've seen pictures of the four people I'm sponsoring before and after their treatment - and, at first, they looked emaciated and beaten down. Today they are happy and healthy and living positive, hopeful lives," Female First quoted her as saying. It blows me away, because it was so easy to do something so incredibly important. Now I'm trying to involve as many people as possible in combating this pandemic. I've written to celebrities like Halle Berry and Cher, who is looking to sponsor five mothers and their child," she added. You can read Alicia's article in Marie Claire about it here.

Miss Keys made an appearance on DeGeneres' chat show just hours before having to catch a flight to Italy for today's Mtv EMAs, and decided to let the funny-girl kick away at her. Keys teased, "I thought I would hurt you if you (received the kicks) so I just wanna make sure you hurt me." The singer soon mockingly collapsed on the ground, after taking a few of DeGeneres' kicks. Lol! I'm uploading the interview and Karma performance now, you have to wait an half an hour or so. Check back AKO later!

:: Alicia Keys has established herself as one of the hottest musical artists around. She has sold more than 14 million CDs and earned a shelf full of Grammy awards. Her music combines her classical training with an old-school sensibility and today's mix of hip-hop and R&B. Now, she's adding "author" to her growing list of accomplishments. Her new book, "Tears for Water," is a combination of poems and lyrics inspired by her life experiences. The 23-year-old tells The Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen that the title of her book comes from one of her poems, "Love and Chains," that has a line: "I don't mind drinking my tears for water." Keys says, "And when I read that, it resonated in me because I said, 'Wow, I realized at that moment that all of the songs I write, all of the poetry that I write, every way that I express myself comes from some form of my tears, my pain, my happiness, my joy, my frustration, my confusion.' And I drink them for water to be nourished and to survive, in a way." She says she battles with low self-esteem. "There's plenty of times I've written a song just to encourage myself and say, 'You're worth it, and you're incredible, and you're a woman, and you deserve it', you know?". Click here to watch five minute interview at The Early Show.

:: Once in a while, we meet a true musician like Alicia Keys – the kind who looks at her work as an expression of her own life experiences. These are chronicled in her latest release The Diary Of Alicia Keys – Special Edition, an album that reflects who she is and what she’s all about. The album has already spawned such radio and music video favorites like You Don’t Know My Name and Diary which is at No. 5 on DWRZ 93.1 and No. 10 on Wave 89.1. The Special Edition album also includes a bonus CD featuring album track remixes and If I Ain’t Got You, the hit song burning the airwaves where she is joined by the hottest R&B male artist today, Usher. To launch the Special Edition album, Alicia Keys will unleash a new single titled Karma, a song that demonstrates her innovative approach to music and the diversity of her own musical training. Says Alicia, "The album combines classical elements and these crazy beats! Lyrically, it’s about when you give your all to someone, almost leaving nothing for yourself. You let it go and then, the other person suddenly starts feeling like you used to feel! But it’s too late and and what goes around… well, you know the rest!" Now, with The Diary Of Alicia Keys complete, an eager music-buying public gets to see once more this amazing, multi-talented artist fully expressing herself with a dazzling array of new compositions. A rare artist among her own generation, a singer, a songwriter and extraordinary pianist who combines classical training with an old school sensibility and a direct relationship with today’s mix of hip-hop and R&B.

:: Cameron Adams talks to Alicia Keys about long-distance duets, a live album, poems and ... oh, a movie. You've just scored another No.1 in America with your Usher duet My Boo. That song wasn't on either of your latest albums originally. Where did it come from? It was a song of his he wanted to put on his album, but never did. We started talking about stuff and I asked him if he'd be on my remix of If I Ain't Got You. Then he asked me if I'd be on My Boo: that's how it all came together. We were in different countries, so much it was kind of one of the weirdest recording experiences I've ever had, but we kept the vibe strong by speaking on the phone a lot, making sure we were on the same page. But it came out really cool. So it's one of those hi-tech new duets where you aren't even in the same country when you record it? Um, yeah. After I recorded my part, I played it for him, I played it to him over the internet, then when he recorded his part he sent it to me over the net. Read the whole interview in here.
:: That mobile ringtones have replaced song downloads as the money churners is a well known fact, and now a new survey conducted by Billboard magazine has listed the top 20 ringtone favourites with Alicia Keys's song 'My Boo' emerging as the favourite. According to the NY Daily, it was found that most Americans wanted hip hop numbers as ringtones and the only non hip hop number in the top ten downloads list was 'The Halloween Theme' by John Carpenter.

:: It appears Alicia Keys' two albums don't reveal the whole picture. Like that song she played near the end of her often-brilliant sold-out Aotea Centre show last night - the one which she starts by lying on top of the grand piano having just finished the big boudoir ballad Slow Down there. She then slowly reaches over and plays the introduction on the ivories from the other side. Yes, you'd miss that by just listening to the CDs. It was quite a moment. As sexy as all the Michelle Pfeiffer scenes in the The Fabulous Baker Boys - the one where she spent quite a bit of time body-polishing the piano lid - put together. There's probably an Italian word for it, though it probably doesn't appear in any musical theory books. That New Yorker Keys knows her way around a keyboard from the stool-side is no secret - it's what sets her apart as possibly the musically smartest of the soul/R&B divas and connects her to pop history. And there was plenty of past interpolated into the two-hour performance of Keys and band which marked the end of the global touring for her second album. Read the whole article here.

:: Here is article from Sunday Mail, Australia about Alicia's concert in Brisbane: "Brisbane was treated to a touch of soul last night as Alicia Keys soothed, crooned and seduced a rapturous sell-out audience. On the last night of her Australian tour, a mixture of teens, soul enthusiasts and die-hard Keys fans were treated to songs from the five-time Grammy-award winning artist. And if the feedback and applause was anything to go by, her critically acclaimed second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, is set to match the success of her first, Songs in A Minor, which sold 10 million copies. Described by critics as the "Saviour of Soul" the 23-year-old piano prodigy from Harlem in New York, dressed in sassy blue pants with a trilby style hat and cane, opened with Karma. The crowd weren't disappointed. There to see the show, amid a sea of Alicia lookalikes, sassy outfits and trilby-style hats, was Caroline Rosso, 25, of Kangaroo Point in Brisbane. "She is just such a great song-writer, a very talented artist and beautiful as well," Ms Rosso said. "She is very appealing to women and can relate to them." Amos Mwale, 25, of Surfers Paradise, said Alicia was "fine". "The girl keeps her soul", he said. Radio station director Steven Zakos, 25, also of Surfers Paradise, said he was there to support international acts which come to Brisbane. "And because I know just how good she is," he said. Another Surfers fan and Alicia's namesake, Alicia Mainwaring, 19, said while most artists "just used a lot of swearing", her idol's lyrics "actually mean something". Student Andreja Brkanm, 19, of Coorparoo, said Alicia Keys was "real". "I love her as an artist," she said. "I can relate to her songs. I hate Britney Spears, but she's not like them." Lauren Griffith, 18, of Coorparoo, said she though Alicia was "very emotive". "When you play her albums, the grow on you," she said." Thx to Sarah for sending me this article.

:: Usher leads the second annual Vibe Awards with five nominations. Right on his dancing heels is Alicia Keys, with four nominations. Keys also will perform at the Nov. 15 show. Other performers include Nelly, Snoop Dogg with Pharrell, Ashanti, Jadakiss and Beenie Man. The awards show will take place at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in California, UPN said Tuesday. Nominations were determined by Vibe's editorial staff. Winners in each category are decided by votes from music journalists and "regional tastemakers." Usher and Keys are both up for artist of the year, as well as Jay-Z, Kanye, Twista. Some of the other award categories are less traditional, including hottest hook, reelest video, street anthem.
:: Alicia Keys distinguished herself from her pop princess peers last night with a show which revealed her to be the musical love child of Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross. Keys' first of three concerts at the Enmore Theatre was a soul-funk extravaganza, worthy of her heroes including Wonder and Prince. Her prodigious talent was front and centre, with Keys - pictured in action last night - enthralling her audience for the more than 100 minutes she was on stage. Keys and her brilliant band of musicians unashamedly indulged their chops, but the frontwoman never forgot she was there for the audience. The audience was a surprising reflection of her broad appeal, crossing demographics but a number of women who chose to emulate Keys' provided their spectator sport.
:: I've put more blends into blend challenge.

:: Usher and Alicia Keys are the latest artists added to the lineup for the 32nd annual American Music Awards. A rendition of their hit duet "My Boo" joins previously confirmed performances by Maroon5, John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, Fantasia, Twista, Snoop Dogg, Jessica Simpson and other artists. The November 14 show at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles will air live on ABC and will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
:: Alicia Keys is no dancer. And for that I'm extremely grateful. In a time when the multi-discipline pop artist, the singer-dancer-actor-soft drink spruiker-underwear designer, is considered the ultimate, this may seem a strange thing to say. And in certain circles it would be seen as the ultimate insult, far worse than saying you can't sing (for, really, who needs to sing when there's computer tweaking in the studio and taped vocals live?). It is, however, no insult at all in this case. It's a sign of why Alicia Keys is going to mean a hell of a lot more for a hell of a lot longer than many of her contemporaries. Let me clarify a bit first: Alicia Keys can dance. She can shake, shimmy and turn better than most of us dance-floor clodhoppers. But not for her the highly choreographed stage moves while wearing a (probably switched-off) headset microphone or those flash-and-dash manoeuvres in the company of some muscle boys to keep you engaged and feeling like you're "getting your money's worth". In their absence she falls back on strange old things such as stage presence, energy, real singing, great grooves, a live band and honest-to-goodness quality songs. Yeah, I know, what is she thinking? Well, for a start she's thinking that if you start your show with three crackerjack funk excursions which show your absorption of Prince's philosophy, you will have us in the palm of your hand immediately. And damn it, she's right. By the time the closing notes of that third song, Rock Wit U, had been sweated from us the room was abuzz. Read whole article here.
