:: Police are New York's finest and firemen are New York's bravest. Now a campaign, created by Agent 16 and directed by Joel Schumacher, positions teachers as New York's brightest. The centerpiece of the effort, for the New York City Department of Education, is a 60-second spot that shows children pasting up pictures of teachers over posters of celebrities Alicia Keys, Giants running-back Tiki Barber and DJ Junior Vasquez throughout Manhattan. As they cover images of Alicia Keys near Town Hall, a voiceover states, "Some of New York's most admired figures don't sell out concerts." The narration continues, "They'll never be a running back for the Giants. And they probably won't go platinum. But to millions of kids, their teachers are still the biggest heroes in their world. Join New York's brightest. Teach NYC." The ad began running April 14.

A third single"Confessions Part II" entered the chart at No. 48, making it the Hot 100's third-highest debut of 2004. :: Thursday night's stop in Phoenix by the "Ladies First Tour" could have been viewed as a contest, pitting Grammy queens Beyonce and Alicia Keys, as well as Missy Elliott, who's won a few Grammys herself. But instead, with each delivering a strong set with a style of its own, the four-hour jam at America West Arena ended up a friendly showcase of three of R&B and rap's strongest female stars. There was something for any fan of urban music, between Elliott's good-natured rapping, Keys' neo-soul and Beyonce's dance-crazy R&B (...) Keys, known for her classy, piano-driven catalog, chose to lay on the old-school soul influences thick, which was fine with the audience. After a dramatic intro of simulated thunder and lightning, Keys appeared in red fedora, red shirt and skin-tight black slacks to perform a funked-up take on "Karma". She then kicked her tight band into a take on the new "Heartburn" that would have made James Brown proud. All the while, Keys was shaking her body in sexy dance moves that were part Prince and part Tina Turner. Keys burned things up further with 2001's "Rock Wit U," before letting the crowd catch its breath. Taking off her hat to show her famous braids, she moved over to her grand piano to play "A Woman's Worth." That featured Keys and her own group of talented dancers doing flamenco-style moves over a horn-and-conga jam. Keys turned the heat up a few more notches during the new lovemaking theme, "Slow Down," crawling up on and reclining on her piano to shouts from the men in attendance. A hypnotic treatment of her early hit, "Fallin'," set the bar extremely high for Beyonce. Read the whole article here.

April 15, 2004
:: The review by Maya Boyd from The Black World Today: The "Ladies First" concert tour was quite a spectacle Monday evening at Madison Square Garden. Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott and Tamia put on a show worth the standing ovation they received. Perhaps the only problem was determining who gave the best performance. In actuality, there is an artistic equivalence with these ladies. Of course, the finale or headliner of the concert was Beyonce, and she definitely earned her crown. Her voice was as invigorating as her dancing. The visually stimulating costume changes included everything from a rhinestone studded bikini top with "Daisy Dukes" to Dorothy style "Ruby" red slippers with four inch heeled pumps. The surprise appearances at the event included "Big Boi" from Outkast, Destiny's Child members Kelli Rowland and Michelle Williams. But the show stopper was when Jay-Z came out for the "Crazy in Love" duet. Alicia Keys played the piano keys with perfection. Her talent reigns as an original for the new generation of artists and I believe is comparable to such all-time greats as Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill. Missy Elliott was a breath of fresh air with her take on hip hop being innovative and exploitative. Tamia has a grace that is unquestionable and her voice is strong yet soft. This was one of the best all-women concerts ever! Here you can view the pictures.

April 14, 2004
:: If Muhammad Ali had been at Madison Square Garden Monday night, no doubt he would've found something to pound like a drum as he yelled, "The champ is here!". That's exactly the aura Beyoncé gave off as she began her closing set of the Verizon Ladies First Tour, which also features Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott and Tamia. B, seated in a carriage, took the stage to the accompaniment of tribal drums, waving to the crowd like a queen as loyal servants carried her to the front of the Garden. Finally at her destination, she stood on a platform at the front of the stage and began her first number, "Baby Boy." That performance, along with most of her show, looked like a 3-D music video: Dancers joined in on smaller, circular platforms while fire shot from the floor and a long, rectangular screen merged video of flames with images of the performers, seemingly setting them on fire (...) Alicia Keys, who took the stage before Beyonce, made a memorable entrance as well. Rather than sitting at the piano as you might expect, she was standing center-stage, ready to dance. Fittingly, she started with "Heartburn," shaking her body like Ike-era Tina Turner, causing a sudden rise in blood pressure among the men in the audience. The sex appeal was being poured all over Madison Square like milk on Cheerios. "Since I am home, let me see you get your asses out your seats!" yelled the Manhattan native as she kept dancing. Keys' accompanying band played as though it were possessed by James Brown's band, delivering rich, crisp sounds, and coming across even better than on wax. Alicia wasn't too shabby herself. This was no one-faceted pop tart getting onstage and lip-synching. It was soul music so powerful you could feel a tingle in your neck; a voice so heartfelt you wanna slap your momma; the closest this generation will ever get to seeing Aretha Franklin in her prime. :: Sorry for problems with the site, I'm working on it.
:: A few songs into Alicia Keys' set at the MCI Center on Wednesday night, she descended a staircase to thunderous applause and then stopped. Appearing humbled and stunned by the roaring crowd, she cocked her head, paused and finally seemed to realize: "Oh, yes, I'm Alicia Keys!" Billed - correctly - as one of the leading ladies of R&B and hip-hop by the Verizon Ladies First Tour, Keys proved she's second to none in a concert that also brought Beyonce and Missy Elliott to Washington. While those two women offered their canned and contrived moves, it was Keys who won the crowd's heart with her soulful piano ballads. The four-hour concert was vexed by frequent breaks for set and costume changes and failed to gain real momentum until its closing minutes, when Jay-Z joined a red-slippered Beyonce on stage for the hit "Crazy in Love." But by that point, the show was over. Read whole article here.

:: Global sales of recorded music slid again in 2003 as piracy and illegal downloading continued to inflict damage, a leading industry group said Wednesday. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said sales fell 7.6 percent in 2003 from 2002. That suggests something of a pickup in the second half of the year, since sales were off 10.9 percent in the first half of 2003. There were other positive signs. In the United States, releases from artists including Outkast, Alicia Keys and Ludacris powered a return to growth in the second half of the year - particularly the fourth quarter - reducing the overall U.S. drop for the year to 6 percent. Read more.
:: From EurWeb.com: "I reported in my Nov. 18, 2003 column that J Records had a private showcase for superstar Alicia Keys in the Promenade at the Westin Grand Hotel in Washington, D.C. Keys presented new songs from her album, "The Diary of Alicia Keys" in addition to performing some of her hits from her debut "Songs In A Minor". At one point during Alicia's performance, she got up from the piano, tripped, and fell flat on the floor. Those in attendance gasped in disbelief, but Alicia, being a good sport, took the microphone and began singing, "I keep on falling", to poke fun at herself. Well, Keys spoke about that issue yesterday on "Oprah" and said it was her most embarrassing moment ever. She hysterically recalled the incident and laughed at the blooper-but not nearly as hard as I did when I saw her hit the ground."

:: Beyonce Knowles may have taken the Palace stage like a queen Saturday night, riding in like the Queen of Sheba. But it was Alicia Keys whose performance was the crowning achievement as the historic Verizon Ladies First Tour rocked Motown. Knowles and Keys, two of pop and R&B's brightest young stars, are sharing the stage with their inventive hip-hop sister, Missy Elliott, and Windsor's own Tamia. It's believed to be the first time an all-female R&B tour has played - and filled - arenas. Actually, the Palace was not full Saturday night. The crowd of about 14,000 was a few thousand short of capacity, surprising considering the caliber and popularity of the three headliners. Maybe the $68.50 and $78.50 (before surcharges) asking prices were a bit steep for the singers' relatively young fans. Read the whole article in here.

:: If you missed the first Philadelphia stop on the Verizon Ladies First Tour starring Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott and featuring Tamia, dry your eyes. The show returns Tuesday. The March 23 sold-out extravaganza at the Wachovia Center was packed with screaming teens and patient parents... Alicia Keys wasted no time dazzling the crowd with a wide-screen entrance to start her performance. Fans gazed in excitement while the piano prodigy made her way from the big screen to the big stage. Sporting her signature braids crowned with a black fedora and a pink and black tuxedo coat with tails, Keys strolled out onstage and fell in sync with backup dancers to open her show with "Heartburn" from her new album The Diary of Alicia Keys. Appealing to the multigenerational crowd, Keys mastered the stage with her dancing and her virtuosity on the piano. She seamlessly blended the hit "Nassau's Gone Funky" with her own song, "Rock Wit U." Soccer moms along with their younger fans sang along, pumping their fists in the air and at times jumping up and down to the syncopated Spanish rhythms of the music. "A Woman's Worth" was the mantra led by Keys as most of the female fans ebbed and flowed in the now packed sports arena. Keys switched gears shortly after to conduct her back-up band in a performance of Sugar Hill Gang's "Apache," which jumpstarted the crowd into another dance frenzy. Keys flexed her classically trained muscles and performed "Fallin' " from her multiplatinum album Songs in A Minor. Keys could not end the show without performing her hit "You Don't Know My Name." Even those who didn't know the lyrics seemed to make out the first three words by listening to the swell of teenage girls scream "Baby, baby, baby!". Read the whole article here.

:: Alicia Keys is going to Copenhagen to play in the city’s Royal Theater, making her the first ever pop act to do so. The Theater, which was built in the late 1700s, generally hosts events such as ballets and philharmonic orchestras, but they're making an allowance for Alicia. "Although rhythmic concerts normally are outside our normal repertoire, we believe that an artist like Alicia Keys has a quality and a caliber that fits perfectly in our classical surroundings", remarked theater manager Michael Christiansen, using the maximum number of big, fancy-sounding words. Miss Keys' Royal Theater show is set for Jun 16, and will likely be a cozy affair, as the Theater's capacity is limited to 1330 people. One day later: Keys's concert at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen has solo out. More than 1200 tickets for the first-ever pop show to take place inside the 200 year-old theater were snapped up in less than 16 minutes. Wow! Alicia will perform on the theater's Old Stage, which dates back to 1874, on June 16.

:: Alicia Keys has found one major problem with touring stadiums - smelly dressing rooms. The Fallin' singer, who is currently on a tour of North America with Beyonce Knowles and Missy Elliott, has found it necessary to carry scented candles on the road, because she often performs in a stadium just a day after a sports game. She explains, "When I get in my dressing room, the first thing I do is light some candles and incense, because sometimes the night before there's a big game and a lot of nasty, smelly, stinky, sweaty guys just came out of here. So I like to set the vibe and put my energy in here".
:: Alicia has been shopping her diary as a full-fledged book for months. She's received at least one bid from Bantam Books, but a legal fracas with her former literary agent may prevent that deal from going through. Alicia's new literary agent, however, is pitching not only the diary, but a volume of poetry and a teenage mystery series to publishers, hoping to sign a contract for all three properties. The volume of poetry will consist of unreleased songs written by Alicia and will fill approximately 160 pages. The mystery series is somewhat more high-concept, and will require the assistance of two writers who will actually pen the books, which are based loosely on the "Nancy Drew" series.Alicia won't personally write the mysteries, she will star in them as a younger version of herself who solves crimes when she's not attending a Harlem performing-arts school.
:: Bolt.com has a cool Miss Keys' new album review: Alicia Keys has been writing and playing music since high school. As a choir-major at Manhattan's Professional Performance Arts School, Keys had ample time to develop the proper voice for her soulful laments. The hard work paid off when her debut, Songs in A Minor, sold 10 million copies and won five Grammys. Follow-up Diary of Alicia Keys debuted at number one, selling 618,000 copies in its first week. Only 50 Cent and Linkin Park sold more albums last year. Love her or hate her, you must admit that Alicia Keys is a force to be reckoned with and a name worth remembering. If you haven't heard of her, you have some serious catching up to do. You can view the site here.
:: I've put first blends into challenge, keep sending!

:: TLC hadn't already nabbed it for an album title "Crazysexycool'' would've been a great name for the tour by soul, pop and hip-hop superstars Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott that stopped at the FleetCenter. The Verizon Ladies First Tour, as it is officially called, brought into sharp relief and celebrated the differences between the absurd and absurdly gifted Elliott, the deeply soulful and supremely cool Keys and the admirably self-possessed Beyonce. While each lady hit her share of heights, each also displayed a few nagging flaws that - since the women are all so young - could well disappear in time. In a tour of equals, recent Grammy queen Beyonce asserted her dominance by holding down the headlining spot with the flashiest stage set and by entering on a regal palanquin carried by four bare-chested men and throwing rose petals to her adoring audience (...) When Alicia Keys sat behind her piano and held court during her 65-minute set, she was the highlight of pure emotional connection in the entire show. She imbued songs like "A Woman's Worth,'' "How Come You Don't Call Me'' and the exquisite "Butterflyz'' with a gut-wrenchingly soulful and yet remarkably pristine howl. Whether she was conveying fear, jubilance or even whimsy, she went to her deepest reservoirs and was able to wrench empathy from the audience. The whole article is on this page.

:: Could Alicia Keys be the next Nancy Drew? As if writing one book weren't an ambitious enough plan, the singer has expanded upon her earlier vision: According to a written proposal, Keys now plans to release a volume of poetry and a series of young-adult mystery novels in which she will be a teen detective character, in addition to a book based on her diaries. Keys had been shopping the idea of transforming her diary entries into a full-fledged book last month), but didn't have a written proposal until recently. Publishers who took meetings with the singer were surprised to learn that she has several literary ideas she's hoping they'll buy, explained in a belated proposal that includes plans for suggested co-writers. "None of this was discussed in the meeting," one publishing source said, "and this proposal is landing three weeks later." According to the proposal, Keys' literary influences range "from Ralph Ellison to John Steinbeck to Maya Angelou to James Baldwin," at least as they pertain to the diary project, which would be a "one-of-a-kind autobiography documenting this unbelievably talented woman's evolution from a young girl with unlimited hopes, dreams and aspirations into an internationally successful superstar." Her poetry project would include some of the "dozen unreleased [lyrical] gems for every song that makes it onto one of her albums," and would fill about 160 pages when completed. Read more.

:: Fans of Alicia Keys should catch the singer when they can. She'll be at Conseco Fieldhouse on Tuesday, joining Beyonce Knowles and Missy Elliott in "Ladies First" - the most talked-about tour of the year. Beyond that, Keys hints that she's preparing for projects that will take her outside the role of musical performer. The 23-year-old has seen both of her albums enter the charts at No. 1. In 2002, Keys claimed five Grammy Awards, a record-tying tally for a solo female artist (Knowles, Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill share the single-year mark). But this is no time for complacency. Keys says she wants to run her own record company and also write a novel on par with J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." Entertainment executives hold an alluring power, Keys observed during a recent conference-call interview. "I know the music world can appear very glamorous," she said. "Kids tell me, 'I want to be a rapper,' 'I want to be a singer.' I say, 'There's so much more that happens behind that rapper or that singer that you can be a part of. And, honestly, that can get you farther than that rapper or that singer will ever reach.' "(I like to) talk about those different career choices, because they're not really promoted that much." The classically trained pianist called her current album "The Diary of Alicia Keys," a title that signals a willingness to share deep thoughts. Read whole article in here.

:: Alicia Keys will be the first pop artist ever to give a concert at Copenhagen's 18th century Royal Theater, the playhouse said Wednesday. Keys, know for the success of 2001's "Songs in A Minor," will perform June 16 on the theater's main Old Stage. "Although rhythmic concerts normally are outside our normal repertoire, we believe that an artist like Alicia Keys has a quality and a caliber that fits perfectly in our classical surroundings," theater manager Michael Christiansen said. The Royal Theater said it was the first time ever that a pop singer would perform there. The downtown Copenhagen playhouse dates back to 1770. Its repertoire includes classical drama, ballets, operas and concerts by philharmonic and chamber orchestras. With its red velvet padded walls and seats and its golden balconies, the Old Stage from 1874 is the oldest of the theater's four stages. It can seat 1,330 people.

:: OutKast is hardly that in the music world this year. The rap duo snagged two Soul Train Music Awards over the weekend for best R&B/soul or rap album and for best R&B/soul or rap music video, making them the only multiple winner at this year’s ceremony, which was hosted by Alicia Keys and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Other winners included Luther Vandross for best single, male for "Dance With My Father", Alicia Keys for best single, female for "You Don’t Know My Name", Floetry for best single, group, band or duo for "Say Yes", and best album, female went to Beyonce. For a list of the night’s other winners, check out www.soultrain.com.
:: From Hell's Kitchen to performing at the House of Commons, the rise of Alicia Keys has been as startling as it is welcome. Stephanie Merritt meets R&B's only true diva in New York to hear how she has mixed up Chopin with soul music and humility with the lifestyle of a superstar. In the foyer of a rehearsal studio in Manhattan's Chelsea district, young men and women loll by the coffee machine as if waiting for a casting for extras in 8 Mile - all Puffa jackets, huge jeans, double T-shirts, beanie hats - and chat over the muffled confusion of bass rhythms thudding from the various rooms. So homogenising is the uniform that I walk straight past the young girl in a bandanna and owl-like shades hanging in the corridor as I look for radiant soul diva Alicia Keys, who is rehearsing tonight. 'It is so nice to meet you,' she says, when the mistake is rectified, with a smile that would melt glass, and the strangest thing is that she really sounds as if she means it. 'Soul' and 'diva' are two words that have become inseparable in an industry focused as much on packaging as on musical content, and although it's a label stuck indiscriminately on any young woman of colour who sings R&B, Keys is about as far from strutting and blinging as you could hope to find in this business. Read the whole article here.

:: She's already the poster-woman for how to sell millions of albums by weaving an array of interests and influences around an acoustic instrument. But Alicia Keys also could be the poster-woman for taking piano lessons seriously. "The piano always attracted me," Keys said in a January Express-News interview. She also said she still practices because, "It's a skill you have to work on." Thanks to Keys' honing of her skills and the art of synthesizing styles of music, she has scored a couple of smash hits. Her J-Records debut album, "Songs in A Minor," released in 2001, brought together jazz, soul, R&B, hip-hop and even some classical riffs. That disc and the hit song "Fallin'" helped Keys take home five Grammy Awards, including the best new artist trophy. The follow-up, "Diary of Alicia Keys," released late in 2003, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart with another example of how to defy musical boundaries. More than 600,000 copies of "Diary" were sold in the first week of the disc's release, which helped Keys set the record for most albums sold by a female artist in 2003. Within a month of its release, "The Diary of Alicia Keys" was certified double platinum. Read whole article here.

:: Alicia Keys helped to induct Prince into the the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Prince performed three hits including 'Kiss', which Alicia performed at this year's Brits with Missy and Gwen Stefani. Although ZZ Top and the late George Harrison were also honoured, Alicia says she was only there for one man: "For everybody tonight, for me, my favourite has to be Prince." "I'm honoured to be able to take that story away with me and tell my grandchildren years from now that I was the one that inducted Prince into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is something very unforgettable!". The concert, also featuring R&B diva and Houston native Beyonce and rapper Missy Elliot and Tamia, will go on as scheduled. Ticket holders who do not want to go to the concert can receive a full refund through the point of purchase. Clear Channel marketing manager Daniel Rendon says he has no further information about Keys' cancelation, "and I'm not just saying that, I really don't know," he said. :: Sensational production values overtook substantive musical ones some time ago in pop land. But Friday's Ladies First show offered hope of a youth-oriented evening built on something more solid than MTV-fueled smoke and mirrors (or nipple adornments and backing tracks). The tour, which launched Friday night at a sold-out Office Depot Center, features Beyoncé Knowles, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott. All three urban-pop artists are women who have asserted control over their careers, writing and producing much of their own material. They are not Barbie dolls. Keys and Knowles are multiplatinum superstars who have entered the Grammy hall of fame, tying Lauryn Hill's record for most Grammys won in one year by a female: five. The night did offer some dazzling vocal displays and strong statements of purpose for the mostly female audience. But unfortunately, the acts seemed intent on outdoing each other with big shows rather than succinct artistry. Read the whole article here.

:: Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott are joining forces for what should be one of the spring's hottest tour packages. Starting Friday in Florida, the Verizon Ladies First Tour embarks on a 24-city excursion. Between them, the co-headliners have stacked up close to 30 million albums sold, 16 Grammys and countless other awards, along with a playlist full of hit songs. With the sultry Tamia opening the tour, it's an unprecedented assemblage of urban female star power. "Hopefully we can do something historic," Beyoncé says. "Be some of the first R&B and hip-hop women to have a successful tour together." Beyoncé is riding high off five Grammys for her solo debut, Dangerously in Love. Keys has sold 2.3 million copies of her sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Elliott's current single, I'm Really Hot, is climbing the charts. The same can be said for Tamia's new hit, Questions, and her third album, More, is due in stores April 6. Read more.

:: There is an unwritten rule in the music business: Getting a Grammy Award means you have won the approval of your peers. Getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means you've become a respected and enduring legend. During the past 18 years, the Hall of Fame honor has gone to such an elite group that it is little wonder the induction ceremonies have produced unforgettable moments - reunions of disbanded superstar groups, emotional and historically rich speeches and once-in-a-lifetime, all-star jam sessions. The magic will continue with the 19th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. This year's inductees are Jackson Browne, the Dells, George Harrison, Prince, Bob Seger, Traffic and ZZ Top. Stars set to induct the honorees include Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Tom Petty, OutKast and Alicia Keys. VH1 will tape the event for broadcast March 21. Read the whole article here.

:: Alicia Keys would like to transform her diary entries into a full-fledged book, but there's trouble brewing behind the scenes. Two literary agents are vying for the right to represent the singer's publishing deal, with one claiming the deal has already been made, causing uncertainty about whether her book would actually hit shelves as planned or could be tied up in possible litigation. Keys first made the rounds to shop her book with literary agent Noah Lukeman, who took a series of meetings with New York publishers earlier this year and then conducted an auction, with Bantam reportedly coming out on top with a bid of $1.15 million. But in an unusual move, a second agent, David Vigliano, started telling publishers that he represented the rights to the singer's journal. He's since been conducting his own set of publisher meetings, as if the book had never been sold. Read more on Mtv.com.
:: Alicia Keys' hit "You Don't Know My Name" is a glimmering slow jam, plushly upholstered by the producer Kanye West. Now the same song is also an underground favorite, thanks to a lovely remix that matches her voice to a slightly out-of-tune reggae groove. The original sounded old-fashioned, but the reggae version sounds positively ancient, like some lost classic salvaged from a dusty Kingston record shop. The remix hasn't been officially released, but some radio stations (including Hot 97 and WQHT-FM in New York) are already playing it, and bootleg vinyl singles are percolating through D.J.-friendly stores and Web sites.
:: I've added one blend into challenge, send me your blend with Miss Keys!

:: Usher's "Yeah!" ruled the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for a second week, and ascended to the top spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The one-rung jump on the latter tally marks the second time Usher has knocked Twista's "Slow Jamz" featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx out of a chart-topping position. Last week's move to No. 1 on the Hot 100 pushed "Slow Jamz" to No. 2, where it sits again this week. Nonetheless, there's still a No. 1 in Twista's pocket, as the cut extends its hold on the Hot Rap Tracks chart's top spot to a seventh week. The Hot 100's greatest sales gainer is Sean Paul's "I'm Still in Love With You" featuring Sasha, while the chart's top debut is Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" at No. 64. Read more here.
:: Beyonce, Missy Elliott and Alicia Keys coming to Gund. It's ladies night at Gund Arena Tuesday, March 30. That's when three of the biggest names in music hit town for the Verizon Ladies First Tour 2004: R&B-pop superstar Beyonce, hip-hop luminary Missy Elliott and neo-soul diva Alicia Keys. Opening the 7 p.m. show will be R&B singer Tamia. Tickets for arguably the biggest show so far this year are $52.50 & $69.50, on sale at 10 am Saturday, available at the box office and Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone, 216-241-5555 (Cleveland) or 330- 945-9400 (Akron).
:: Vogue magazine has come up with a definitive name for Alicia Keys’s fashion sense: Lady Pimp. Alicia’s fringed suede jacket and bellbottom jeans are the trappings citing by Vogue, and Keys says it’s all her own. The star says record executives wanted to do a Britney or Christina makeover of her look, but she said now way. "They wanted me to be as underclothed as I could possibly be," she tells the Vogue. "And that was hard. It's a vulnerable position you're in. I was young and brand-new to it, and a young woman tends to want to please first ... but I learned to cut that (expletive) out real fast." Here you can find scans from Vouge.

:: Board, HQ Gallery and Fancentral still don't work. My host has some problems with mysql, so you'll need to wait, I hope these sections will come back today. Sorry for that.
:: As we embark on Women's History Month, I see a lot going on with women in music, and it's not all breast-baring and trash-talking. Some of it actually is forward-thinking and wonderful, including the exciting announcement of the first heavyweight arena tour of the year, featuring Beyonce, Missy Elliott and Alicia Keys. The Ladies First 2004 tour kicks off March 12 in Fort Lauderdale, its only Florida date. The all-female tour is the first of its kind for R&B and hip-hop audiences. As Elliott pointed out at a news conference, this sort of thing has been done with Lilith Fair ladies, but never for the "urban" crowd. Keys told the media, "The show in itself is going to be exciting for that fact that you're going to see three different styles of women who are strong, who produce their own music, write their own music - really are their voices behind the music." Keys is right. For these three to come together is indeed historymaking. You can't get a much more powerful R&B triumvirate - male or female - right now than Beyonce, whose chart-topping Dangerously in Love gobbled up at the Grammys; multi-Grammy winner Keys, who recently released her critically acclaimed sophomore The Diary of Alicia Keys; and rapper Elliott, whose brilliant This is Not a Test was featured on many critics' best of 2003 lists. :: Grammy winner Alicia Keys became the first major star to confirm she will be attending the Syracuse school district's Hip-Hop Summit at the Carrier Dome March 10, local organizers said Tuesday. Rapper Fabolous, meanwhile, is "99 percent certain" to be there, organizer Julius Edwards said. Other artists are expected to confirm over the next few days. Edwards said although the Dome event will be open only to Syracuse high school students, organizers are hoping to arrange an evening rally at the War Memorial for the larger community. The rally would stress voter registration and would include the same stars who will appear at the Dome that morning. Other stars who have been invited are Ashanti, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Doug E. Fresh and The Rev. Run already have confirmed they will attend. The stars will discuss issues on a panel rather than perform. Read more.

:: Beyonce Knowles, the belle of the ball at the Grammy Awards earlier this month, will soon get a chance to add more hardware to her trophy collection. Bee picked up four nominations for the 18th annual Soul Train Music Awards, which honor recording artists in the R&B, hip-hop and gospel fields, organizers said at a news conference on Thursday. The ceremony, to be hosted by singer-producers Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Alicia Keys, will take place on March 20 at the International Cultural Center Auditorium in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in syndication. Read the whole article here.
:: The New York Post reports Alicia Keys was a no-show at the launch of America Magazine at the Mondrian in Los Angeles last week, even though she had promised a month earlier to host the bash since she was on the cover of the magazine. "All night she said she was on her way, but never showed," said a rep for the event. Keys later claimed she had to "make a flight to New York." Many are wondering if she just didn't want to talk about her interview in the magazine, where she noted she had once been in an abusive relationship with a gun-toting older man.

Missy added, "It's fun, it's fun. I think we kinda just fit into each other's world - even though we're different, we came together." Read more.

:: When Alicia Keys performed before a sold-out United Center crowd on Friday night, she had the daunting task of not just entertaining the packed arena. She also had to literally rouse a dozing crowd. That's because Keys, who headlined 107.5 WGCI-FM's first - and appropriately titled - Big Jam Slow Jam concert, took the stage at 1:18 a.m., almost two hours after her scheduled start time, thanks to the station's sluggishness at moving along the five artists who performed earlier. Keys strutted onstage in black-framed sunglasses, a black-buttoned overcoat worn over skin-tight black Capri pants and gold heels. "I know y'all been here for 17 hours," she said, laughing. "But you know what? I'm happy to be with you." Backed by an able six-piece band, Keys performed an hourlong, 12-song set that demonstrated confidence, poise and a deft synthesis of her classical-piano training and sassy hip-hop leanings. No longer stiff, or glued behind her piano (it was an electric piano on Friday), Keys appeared self-assured in her dual roles: the soulful balladeer and sexy chanteuse. The revved-up "Heartburn," from Keys' latest album, "The Diary of Alicia Keys," allowed her to let loose, stripping away her coat to reveal a tight leather jacket, gold-lame bustier and sexy dance-moves to match. And don't accuse Keys of being shy anymore. During her cover of Prince's "Kiss," she played sex-kitten, vamping in a chair with backup singers in tow. Read the whole article here.

:: For an album to go platinum is the ultimate dream for an artist. When a CD goes platinum, one million copies shipped, an artist knows he's adored, respected, even loved. All those years of work have paid off, and the money flows in the door in great bucketfuls. It's interesting to take a look at which albums, among current chart toppers, have gone platinum. Interesting because it shows how varied the music buying public is. There are a lot of different types of folks out there, as you'll see by looking at the platinum CDs. The two albums at the very top of the chart have yet to go platinum. At #1 is Ruben Studdard's Soulful and at #2 is Alicia Keys' The Diary of Alicia Keys. Only time will tell if they'll ship a million. Read more in here.

:: Three of the biggest superstars in contemporary Pop and R&B music are joining forces in what promises to be one of the most exciting and historic tours of 2004: The Verizon Ladies First Tour starring Beyonce (co-sponsored on the tour by Steve Madden and L'Oreal), Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliott, with special guest Tamia. One of the most highly-anticipated tours ever, the cross-country extravaganza is scheduled to begin March 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and winds up April 18 at the Oakland Coliseum. "Verizon is extremely pleased to be the title sponsor of The Verizon Ladies First Tour starring Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott," said Bob Ingalls, Verizon Retail Markets president. "These three phenomenal artists transcend audience expectations and are sure to provide a truly exciting series of performances. Verizon's title sponsorship of the tour enhances our long and distinctive history of providing quality entertainment for our customers." Beyonce is touring the US for the first time in support of her #1 multi platinum debut solo album, Dangerously In Love, which earned her five 2004 Grammy Awards. Alicia Keys had one of the most auspicious debut albums in history with the phenomenal Songs In A Minor. Released in 2001, the album earned Keys an incredible five Grammy Awards, including the coveted Best New Artist. Her much-anticipated follow-up album, The Diary Of Alicia Keys, debuted at #1 with more than 618,000 albums scanned, giving Keys the largest first week's sales of any female artist in 2003. Within a month of its release, the album was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Read this whole article in here. And here you can check the tour dates.

:: Hip-hop and R&B ruled the Grammy Awards last night, with OutKast's critically acclaimed "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" taking home album of the year, Luther Vandross nabbing four awards and singer Beyoncé winning almost every category in which she was a nominee. Beyoncé took home five, including best R&B performance by a duo or group for "The Closer I Get To You," (with Luther Vandross). She tied the record for most wins by a female artist, a list that includes Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Norah Jones. But in a surprise upset, "Clocks," by the British balladeers Coldplay, stole the Grammy for record of the year, beating out not only Beyonce but other powerful competitors such as Eminem and OutKast. Still, nobody seemed able to forget Jackson, whose absence made her all the more noticeable. Jackson raised eyebrows at last week's Super Bowl with a performance that ended with Justin Timberlake ripping away her bustier and exposing her right breast. Though she apologized for the performance, CBS banned her from taking part in a planned tribute to R&B singer Luther Vandross during the Grammy show. When singer Patti LaBelle introduced the Vandross tribute segment she pointedly noted that, "A few of Luther's friends - including Jackson - wanted to take the opportunity to pay tribute to him tonight." And a possible reference to CBS' increased scrutiny of the Grammy show's content - which included a five-minute tape delay to cover up any possible mishaps - came from Christina Aguilera. As she nervously gathered her wits for her acceptance speech, she joked, "I don't want to have the same thing happened that Janet had done." But Justin Timberlake, who has been criticized for denying any responsibility for the Jackson performance - addressed the matter head-on when he accepted his award. Alicia Keys delivered a version of "A House Is Not A Home," one of Vandross' most famous songs. (It's best known to hip-hop listeners as the origin of the refrain "are you gonna be, are you gonna be," now being used in Twista's hit "Slow Jamz.") Celine Dion delivered a serviceable performance of Vandross' "Dance With My Father." Read the whole article here.

:: When it comes to the Janet Jackson breast scandal, solidarity among her fellow R&B superstars appears to only go so far. At a news conference on Thursday to promote an upcoming joint tour, younger divas Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott largely dodged the issue of Jackson's televised indiscretion after reporters sought comment over the objections of a publicist. "I'm a big fan of Janet," Elliott finally said. "I'm not here to judge ... I stand behind her always, so that's all I have to say about it." Keys chimed in with an "Absolutely," while Knowles sidestepped a question about Jackson's state of mind during a photo shoot the day after the Super Bowl. The lack of enthusiastic support seemed palpable as the 37-year-old Jackson deals with fallout from Sunday's Super Bowl in Houston, where her right breast was exposed during the half-time show. Jackson, who has apologised for the incident, is said by her publicist to have bowed out of Sunday's Grammy Awards, where she was due to introduce a tribute to stroke-afflicted soul singer Luther Vandross. Spokesmen at CBS, which will air the telecast, declined to comment on her involvement, but syndicated TV news show "Extra" reported Thursday that she has been replaced by Patti Labelle. Pop singer Justin Timberlake, Jackson's partner-in-crime at the Super Bowl, remains on the Grammys roster as a performer, while Keys and Knowles also will perform. Knowles-Keys-Elliott tour of U.S. arenas, meanwhile, will begin on March 12 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It's about females coming together and being able to work together, and we haven't had that," Elliott said, referring to the tour's all-black talent lineup. "This is like history in the making".

:: Lilith Fair - Urban Style. That's the concept behind the upcoming tour to be co-headlined by Beyoncé, Missy Elliott and Alicia Keys, first reported last month by Billboard. Dubbed the Verizon Triple Theat tour, the trek kicks of March 12 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and wraps April 18 in Oakland, Calif. Tamia will support. "This is history in the making," Elliott said. "I've always wanted to do a Lilith Fair on the urban side." "It's all about the ladies," added Beyoncé, who said she began thinking about the idea eight months ago and then contacted Elliott and Keys. "We're fans of each other." The trio declined to reveal specifics when queried about show order, special guests and staging. Keys did promise the performances will be exciting. "We're all different women with different styles of music," she said. "The shows will be exciting just for that fact." Prior to the tour, Keys will join Musiq, Keith Sweat, Teena Marie and Jaheim for Chicago radio station WGCI-FM's Slow Jam, to be held Feb. 13 at the city's United Center. Tour dates are here.

:: Ray, Goodman & Brown are still in the musical mix. Millions have heard and brought Alicia Keys' single, "You Don't Know My Name " off the smash CD, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Others have enjoyed the accompanying video with Keys and rapper/actor Mos Def. One of the best-kept secrets is that the vocal group Ray, Goodman & Brown, backs up Keys on the song. Foundation member of the group, Al Goodman was recently interviewed on CKLN-FM 88.1's news & entertainment magazine show From A Different Perspective. Goodman explained how the success of this collaboration has helped advance the group member's career. Said Goodman: "It has helped us tremendously in terms of sales (and) in terms of people knowing that the group is still out there, because we did a lot of major television shows in America with (Keys). We did the Jay Leno Show, The Vibes Awards, Ellen Degeneres, The View, BET's 106 & Park - a lot of shows. She was so kind to include us with anything that she did when she was promoting the album before it came out." Read more here.

:: In what is sure to be a hot ticket, final negotiations are underway for a package trek featuring Beyonce Knowles, Missy Elliott and Alicia Keys. The artists would play arenas in about 20 markets this spring. Knowles made occasional live appearances but did not tour in support of her solo debut, "Dangerously in Love." Destiny's Child grossed more than $2 million from 11 mid-sized arena dates in 2001. As headliner of the MTV TRL tour with Nelly, Eve, Dream and Jessica Simpson, the group hauled in $12.5 million at sheds and arenas that summer. Keys' headlining tour in 2002 grossed $14.8 million from 89 shows reported, including European dates. Elliott has primarily been a key support act, including at two stadium sellouts with Eminem and 50 Cent last summer in Detroit. Check out the tour dates here.

:: Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name" retains the top spot on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks for a sixth week and becomes the first record to surpass 90 million listener impressions at R&B radio. Name" exceeds the 88.5 million audience total 50 Cent's "In Da Club" set the week of March 8, 2003. The strength of "Name" at adult R&B and R&B/hip-hop outlets is the main reason it is able to outpace its nearest competitor, the hip-hop-based "Slow Jamz" by Twista Featuring Kanye West & Jamie Foxx, by more than 25 million listener impressions on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. That is the largest disparity between the top two titles on the airplay list since the inception of the Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems chart in 1992.

:: Alicia Keys will be in the UK next month because she's been nominated for a Brit award, and she's looking forward to hooking up with a certain British pop star when she's here. She's up for International Female Solo Artist, and she told us she was chuffed to be nominated amongst such strong contenders - Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Missy Elliott and Kylie Minogue. She sounded very excited about coming over for the Brits and it turns out she's dying to meet up with Robbie Williams: "Yeah, I like Robbie. He's the most sarcastic, funny person I've ever seen, whenever I've been somewhere he's there." "I can't remember which award show I was at, but he did this kind of thank you acceptance speech, where you can't be there and you tape it. He put one together, and he was so funny without even being there." "I look forward to meeting him because he seems like a cynical kind of guy!". More about the Brits here and here.

:: Us Weekly caught up with Alicia Keys for a Q&A and asked the singer how she manages to stay so slim. "It takes work," she admitted. "I'm a jogger, I love to run. And I've gotten into kickboxing." And while she's been known to dress conservatively, she's been showing some leg lately. "I usually hid them," she said, "so people are surprised when I whip one out!"
:: I've updated win award section.
:: Alicia Keys perfomed during a speech by Carly Fiorina, Chairman and CEO of HP, during a keynote address of the Consumer Electronics Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center Hilton Hotel on Thursday (January 8). You can find the pictures here.
:: I've added more Alicia's promotional pictures. Look at the pics above or click here. Also I've put some scans from Gala, polish Magazine and more photos from Keys performance at Top of the Pops in UK. See them all in this gallery. Here you can watch a portion of this perf.
