:: The New York soul singer, Alicia Keys, who dropped to number two last week,
returned to number one with a three-week tally that now surpasses 1.3 million
copies sold. Diary of Alicia Keys jumped back into the number one spot selling
nearly 370,000 copies, according to SoundScan numbers. Just two weeks ago, Diary
debuted in the top spot selling 618,000 copies, the third best sales week of
the year behind Linkin Park and 50 Cent and fifth best all-time by a solo female
artist. According to E-Online, with Keys back on top, last week's chart champ
Ruben Studdard fell to number eight with his debut, Soulful , selling 245,000
copies. Offering Keys considerable competition this past week, Toby Keith's
Shock N Y'All landed in the number two spot less than 400 discs behind Diary.

:: Alicia was a guest on TRL Germany. Here's a short story about this apperance
written by Kai: "She didn't perform. They were just talking about the album,
that it is very romantic and personal. She told about the making of the record,
that she did everything herself and that it took about 8 months to finish it.
Her favorite tracks on the album are Heartburn and "If I Ain't
Got You". She answered the question of a caller about how she came to music
making. Another c
aller
asked her, ifshe ever was a waitress in real life. She wasn't and that's why
she had to practice before the videoshoot how to balance the plates and stuff.
But she considered herself to be a good waitress. Also, she told about her boyfriend
and how long they'd been together, that hes very mature and loves her
very much. She also has a 12 year old brother. She's gonna spend Xmas at home
in New York with her family. She has 5 days off. At one point Anastacia (the
host) asked Alicia what she was doing ast years because the last time they met
was about 2 years ago at the Echo awards in Berlin (she was the one who gave
Alicia the award). And Alicia told her that Echo broke, but she it's not that
bad, because she has two Echos now (the pictures where she is making funny face).
She will be back to Germany next year. They are just planning the tour. She
will do some smaller shows (about 800 people) but also a big arena tour."
I've put about 100 captures from this show in
this gallery. Thx so much Kai!
:: New blends into challenge added.
:: I've added more HQ pictures
from Pacha Club in Spain.

:: Soul diva Alicia Keys has slammed contestants on the hugely successful Pop
Idol format - accusing them of only being interested in music to get famous.
The Fallin' singer, 22, has little time for those who choose to launch their
singing careers off the back of the Simon Cowell -starring shows in her native
America and Britain. Keys says, "There are two sides to look at with the
Pop Idol thing. On the one hand, it's an incredible experience for anyone who
takes part. On the other, I think a true artist is someone who would do what
they do - with or without the show. They would do it even if they were only
being paid a dollar an hour, or they would perform in a run down, smoky bar
in the middle of nowhere if it meant they were able to sing. "The essence
of shows like that is that they take away from the heart and soul of music and
it just becomes like, 'Well, I'm just doing it to be on TV'. Simon Cowell's
really famous in the States and I can tell you if he ran into me I would definitely
give him a piece of my mind."
:: New video of the moment is waitin' for ya! It's very

December 20, 2003
:: When Alicia Keys' debut album arrived in 2001, it was clear that this New
Yorker was an immense talent; a singer-songwriter with an artistry and taste
far beyond the reach of all her young female pop and R&B rivals. The main
question was how she would employ those gifts. In the 15 songs on "Diary,"
Keys employs arrangements (sometimes lavish, sometimes intimate) that update
the musical sensibilities of the '60s and '70s soul tradition. She even salutes
that glorious pop period by including a version of the Gladys Knight hit "If
I Were Your Woman" in the album. As the title suggests, the themes deal
with romantic complexities, from moments of confusion to infatuation to devotion.
At one point, Keys, who co-writes most of the songs, declares about relationships,
"Now it's hardly simple, it's simply hard." Generally, Keys, still
just 22, is more accomplished as a singer than writer at this point, but she
makes each moment on the album seem real and her own, a liberating break from
the calculated, anonymous tone of most commercial R&B and pop these days.

:: Miss Keys is on the cover of January Edition of Ebony Magazine. Picture on
the right, click to enlarge, if anyone has a good scans please send
them to me. Here's a short article from this mag: Alicia Keys is not
your ordinary recording star. In fact, there is nothing ordinary about this
vibrant 22-year-old musical dynamo. She's more than pretty enough to
shake and shimmy scantily clad with the rest and best of the well-endowed crew.
But that's not her style. She's a classically trained pianist and knows Beethoven
and Mozart as well as any Juilliard student, but she prefers to tickle the ivory
keys to soul. There's nothing ordinary about Alicia Keys. Her extraordinary music
appeals to millions of ordinary people, from Blacks and Whites to other ethnicities
and nationalities, from people who love jazz, R&B, hip-hop and soul music.
Her devoted fans are ordinary people who appreciate good musicianship, thoughtful
lyrics and songs that speak to the heart. On a bright, crisp day in New York
City, Ebony sat down with Keys to delve into her heart and soul and ask her
thoughts on love, fame and men, among other topics. Just who is Alicia Keys?
"I would say that I'm a simple person," she says, relaxing on the
sun-drenched terrace of the penthouse suite atop a hip, New York hotel that
is popular with entertainers and the young at heart. "I'm a very caring
person. I'm really not impressed with external, superficial things, materialistic
things. She's more than talented enough to crank out cookie-cutter pop hits,
but that's not her vibe.

:: P. Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, Joe, Glenn Lewis, Crazy Legs, Loon and a few thousand
fans came out Monday night to club Exit to support the woman with the #1 album
in the country, Alicia Keys. Before A. Keys emerged onstage, a small undercurrent
of boos rang out. The jeers, however, were not for Alicia; the crowd was growing
weary of her hypeman, Freak. He would begin to announce the night's headliner,
then stop. Finally he stopped pretending and Keys, clad in a blue leather jacket
and blue jeans, stepped out. She sat down at the keys and briefly warmed up
with classical music before she said one word to the crowd. Then she got up
and took the mic. "Let's gooooo!" she yelled and asked everyone in
attendance for a soul clap as the band played on. "If you're feeling all
right, let me hear you say 'yeah,' " she said. The band started playing
the instrumental to Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize" and Keys and her
hypeman began jumping up and down and pumping their fists. Read more here.
::
In the first week of its release, Alicia Keys quietly outsold pop powerhouses
like Madonna, Christina, and even Britney Spears. Keys' latest album, "The
Diary of Alicia Keys," is on top of the charts. At only 22, Keys refuses
to compromise her music or exploit her image to sell her music. The strategy
paid off with five Grammy's for her first album and instant acclaim for "Diary".
The new CD is a look at the private side of Keys and her life since hitting
it big. She says, "My entire life I've kept a diary from as early as I
can remember, seven, eight. I've grown, I've seen, I've experienced, and I've
lived. And I've laughed and cried some more." Keys has other goals beyond
her music. With a recent spin on NBC's "American Dream," a big-screen
movie role may be close for the star. She says, "When I do it and I will,
I want to be unbelievably wonderful at it. I'm thinking about it, Im taking
my time with it, it is going to be special."

December 15, 2003
:: When Alicia Keys sees hot young stars like J.Lo and Britney shaking and writhing
around onstage, she says, it doesn't invite an ounce of envy. "To have
people say about a singer, 'She has the greatest (behind) in the business,'
that's not what I prefer," Keys says. "I don't care to be in that
category at all." While the 22-year-old Keys has made People magazine's
Most Beautiful list and can command magazine covers the world over, she has
always kept the focus on her keyboards rather than her keister. At a recent
industry showcase to promote her album "The Diary of Alicia Keys,"
in stores now, the singer wore pants, as she often does while performing. "It's
hard to play in a skirt," she says. The music Keys offered at the show
avoided modern pop flash in favor of more dignified '70s soul. Some songs sounded
as if they were airlifted right out of 1974's top 10. "I definitely feel
like I was born in the wrong decade," says Keys. "I actually think
I was performing in the '70s and was reincarnated now." Read

:: Rising star Alicia Keys has her second number one debut on the Billboard
200 albums chart with 'The Diary Of Alicia Keys', following her number one 2001
debut 'Songs In A Minor'. Over on the US singles chart hip-hop duo OutKast dominate
with the top two singles. The only record that came close to matching Keys'
strong debut is country artist Toby Keith, who's 'Shock'n Y'all' rises from
six to two, closely followed by Josh Groban's 'Closer', which is up seven to
three.

:: Miss Keys is still embarrassed about meeting musical idol Stevie Wonder -
because she was so nervous she made a fool of herself. The Fallin' hitmaker
had long held dreams to meet the superstition singer, but when he jumped up
on stage to surprise her during one of her own live performances, she wasn't
quite prepared for the experience. She recalls, "He gets on stage and there
he goes, he starts playing, just lightly. He says, 'Alicia, what do you want
me to sing?' I'm like, 'Uhhh, uhhh...' I can't think of anything. All I can
think of is "You are the sunshine of my life", like his biggest
songs, but I really wanted to do a deep song. "I couldn't remember
anything. I was such an idiot. And so finally I went for AS, which
is one of my favourite songs. We had such a good time singing it and it was
really fantastic. I don't think I sang too much, I probably a little nervous".

:: Alicia Keys' "secret" boyfriend isn't such a secret anymore. Fans
have been whispering about how close she is with her longtime producer, Kerry
Brothers. But at the launch party for her second album, "The Diary of Alicia
Keys," on Tuesday, the canoodling couple left little doubt. Keys beamed
as they cuddled and Brothers whispered in her ear. He didn't leave her side.
And family members, when quizzed, didn't deny the romance. Also paying their
respects to the Grammy-winner were J Music maestro Clive Davis, and legendary
soul singers Patti LaBelle and Jill Scott. When we asked Keys when she's going
to reveal the identity of her boyfriend, she smiled and said, "eventually."
A rep for her label declined to elaborate yesterday. But in a recent interview
with a British newspaper, she said she met Brothers hanging out in Greenwich
Village when she was 14. "Everybody would go every night of the week to
the Village to play basketball, drive around, walk around, party, just freestyle
on corners. It was alive. We were both into music," she explained. Of course,
keeping the boyfriend under wraps has lead some to speculate that Keys leaned
toward the k.d. lang side of the jukebox. But she told us, "I don't know
where that's coming from. It's not that I have any problem with people who are
gay, but I'm just not."
:: Miss Keys has again spoken out at reports that she's a lesbian in an interview
with Shaun Robinson of Access Hollywood. Asked if she was surprised the rumor
had so much legs, the singer responded, "It did! It was just walking and
kept walking. I said, 'Where are you going with this?' You know what I mean?
This is crazy. I absolutely am not. You know, I think it's just what happens
is that any person who graces any TV set is gay. But I think maybe it stems
from the fact that I'm a strong-minded woman and I'm a person that is not demure.
I am aggressive, I say what I mean and I don't apologize for what I say."

:: Sal Cinquemani of slant magazine reviewed Alicia Keys' new album 'The Diary
Of Alicia Keys', giving it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. Cinquemani writes, "'Diary'
is steeped in the kind of authentic, retro soul that recalls Gaye and Wonder.
So now we'll patiently await the yet-to-made, sure-to-be-landmark socially-conscious
Keys record that will blow the lid off everything." Read more here.

:: I'm getting out of music and I'm now going to become a waitress," Keys
said recently, clad in a waitress uniform and holding back a smile on the set
of the video for "You Don't Know My Name." "So you'll see in
the video that this is my new career. I'm really excited about this 'cause it's
is a brand new beginning, you know? Wonderful things. 'You Don't Know My Name'
is about the first time you see a person," she said. "You imagine
all these things about them. You think about how their voice might sound. You
think about what would happen if we went out on our first date, what would happen
if we had our first kiss. You start thinking all these things. Your imagination
runs away with you, but in actuality you don't even know them and they don't
even know your name". Read more on this

:: Alicia Keys has already sold 10 million albums and won five Grammys. So what
is she doing on a cold Sunday night in a tiny club in Brighton? Sunday night
in Brighton, and a fierce autumn wind is whipping the seafront. Radio One has
been encamped here all week, beaming their annual, peripatetic One Live roadshow
from clubs and rock venues throughout Britain's newest city. There have been
Q&A sessions with Starsailor, thumping parties with Dizzee Rascal and Basement
Jaxx, and thumping headaches with Chris Moyles. Tonight, for the finale, Radio
One has flown in the cavalry. The beachside Honey Club is the venue for Trevor
Nelson's Rhythm Nation, whereat a proper global superstar will go about
the business of quietly launching the follow-up to her 10-million-selling de
but album. Read more here.

:: Alicia Keys will be releasing her latest recording effort on Tuesday, December
2, and most people will be hard-pressed not to know about it. She's got a major
media push behind "The Diary of Alicia Keys," her second album, which
features the single "You Don't Know My Name." To herald the new release,
Keys will perform at New York's Webster Hall - a performance that will also
be aired on America Online's "AOL Broadband Rocks!" at 9:00pm EST.
A limited number of fans who pre-order the album at certain New York music stores
will receive a free ticket to the show (more information here).
In addition to the TV appearances Keys has made on BET and "Good Morning
America" already, she'll be hitting the TV waves a few more times - Oprah,
BET's "Blueprint," MTV's "TRL," the Tonight Show with Jay
Leno, and "The Ellen DeGeneres show.
:: In her hotel room 30 stories above Times Square, Alicia Keys sipped miso
soup as a hairstylist pal braided her locks into a whimsical pattern and another
friend dabbed cosmetics around her eyes. A press agent was taking a message
from Faye Dunaway, "who adores Alicia." Her dresser was looking over
what Keys might wear for an MTV appearance, and a bodyguard was just silently
looking over everything. It was like the classic scene from the Marx Brothers'
"A Night at the Opera" when Keys welcomed yet another person into
her suite. "Sit down, join the club," she told The Post. For a woman
who was signed by Clive Davis when she was just 18 and snatched five Grammy
Awards for her debut disc, "Songs in A Minor," the 22-year-old singer
shows no signs of being a diva. In person, she's playful and down-to-earth,
but wise beyond her years. "Some people have everything they could ever
possibly want but they're miserable," she says. "I pray that I never
get to that place where you get sucked up in superficial things, where you lose
your heart and your soul." The tonic for that ill, she says, is to "keep
good people like your family and friends around you." It was clear that's
not just talk but the way she lives her life. That said, the single singer admits
she isn't quite ready for a family of her own. "I do desire that, but I'm
not in any rush," she says. "I want it later in my life. Right now,
I want to get all of the child out of me. I'm going to be a silly young lady
for as long as I can." Read the interview with Miss Keys here.

:: There's no blueprint to follow after selling 5.6 million copies of your debut
album and winning five Grammy Awards - all before the age of 21. But for Alicia
Keys, whose cool, soulful 2001 landmark album, "Songs in A Minor,"
wowed the world, selling more than 10 million units globally, the next step
was simple enough: Take time off. "When I got home from touring, I could
have gone straight into the studio," she says. "But I knew I owed
it to myself to take at least a little time to breathe. "It had been such
a crazy whirlwind. I had to take the time to sleep late, watch movies, be with
my nana, have lunch with my mother and hang with my friends." Fortunately,
no one had to lose too much sleep before Keys announced that she was ready to
make her next album. "It only took me three or four weeks before I said,
'OK, that was fun. Now, I'm going to let all these things in my mind flow,'"
she says. "I was blessed to write so much on the road that I felt like
I was up to my eyes in ideas, and if it went any further it was just going to
overflow, so I had no choice." Those ideas resulted in the forward-stepping
"The Diary of Alicia Keys," due Dec. 2 worldwide. The artist maintains
that the studio process - chronicled on a behind-the-scenes DVD included with
the first 1 million copies of the album - was a pleasure, with the pressure
turned down low. "You can't put the same heart and soul into something
that's so pressured and time-constrained," she explains. "It has to
have the time to take whatever evolution it's going to take." And that
was just fine with RCA Music Group chairman Clive Davis, who signed the singer/songwriter
to J Records and championed her work when she was an unknown. Read more on
this site.
:: P.Diddy and Alicia Keys defended Michael Jackson, who posted bail on child
molestation charges Thursday, accusing the media of hounding the onetime "King
of Pop." It is not my place" to discuss judicial matters, P. Diddy
said at a party Thursday in Los Angeles. But in an interview aired by the local
KTLA television station on Friday, the rapper said "Michael Jackson has
been a positive influence in my life." He said media coverage of Jackson's
ordeal - from the police investigation of his Neverland ranch to his subsequent
surrender to authorities for booking - was excessive, noting that it should
be left to a court to decide the singer's guilt or innocence. Alicia Keys also
lamented the overwhelming media coverage, saying she believed Jackson was probably
innocent.

:: Alicia Keys' debut album Songs in A Minor caught on in a big way with a listening
public anxious to embrace a young entertainer who could both play a piano and
sing. On Wednesday at the Highlands in Hollywood, Keys took to her piano bench
to promote her upcoming follow-up, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Dressed in a spangly
jacket and jeans, Keys offered a sneak preview of the album that drops December
2nd, before an audience that included Stevie Wonder, Missy Elliott Clay Aiken,
Ruben Studdard and Jermaine Dupri. "Let's take it back," said Keys
as an introduction. On a stage lit by clusters of white candles on black wrought
iron stands, Keys weaved favorites from her debut such as the runaway hit "Fallin,'"
"Rock Wit U," and "A Woman's Worth," into her nine-song
set. Playing it coy before newbie "If I Ain't Got You," Keys teased
the crowd, saying "This song means a lot to me, but I'm not gonna talk
about it." Sticking to spare arrangements, Keys led with her piano and
vocals and used the bass, guitar, drums, keyboard and the three back-up singers
in her band as accents, like the occasional group harmony or the short blast
of distorted guitar in "Streets of New York." Playing it coy before

drums, keyboard and the three back-up singers in her band as accents, like the

"You Don't Know My Name," standing up to introduce R&B singers
the Moments and joining them at the front of the stage to lead the crowd in
a staccato "soul clap." "I want to take this back to the time
when harmonies were sweet," she said. Last night's performance begins a
two-week run of promotion that will include a November 24th interview on Primetime
Live, several features on Good Morning America, a December 1st appearance on
Oprah and back-to-back performances on the The Tonight Show, December 4th and
5th.
:: J Records gave a private showcase for superstar Alicia Keys in the Promenade
at the Westin Grand Hotel in Washington, D.C. The singer presented new songs
from her upcoming album, "Diary of Alicia Keys", in addition to performing
some of her hits from her debut "Songs in A Minor". Partygoers enjoyed
fine hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. There was a huge ice sculpture carved into
the album title, "Diary of Alicia Keys". At one point during Alicia's
performance, she got up from the piano, tripped, and fell flat on the floor.
Those in attendance gasped in disbelief, but Alicia, being a good sport, took
the microphone and began singing, "I keep on falling", to poke fun
at herself. In addition to a bunch of local radio talent, taste makers, and
BMG employees, also in attendance was singer Lil' Mo, Jive records newcomer
Raheem DeVaughn, Sister 2 Sister's Jamie Foster Brown and several others from
her magazine staff. Alicia's sophomore album bows Dec. 2.

:: Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com was on hand at Industria Superstudio in the
West Village on Thursday night as Alicia Keys previewed tracks from her new
album 'The Diary of Alicia Keys', due on December 2nd. Friedman writes, "She's
obviously trying new things on 'Diary'. The songs seem to have a bluesy, loose
feel, with jazz tinges. Someone at the show last night said the album sounded
'very '70s. And that's a good thing.' What's obvious is that Alicia Keys has
just an enormous talent the depths of which have yet to be explored. It's very
exciting to think she'll be making music for the next 20 years or more. The
future is hers." Read

:: Alicia Keys thrilled an invited audience in London last night as she debuted
material from her forthcoming second album, 'The Diary Of Alicia Keys'. The
22-year-old singer/songwriter, who won five Grammies for her debut 'Songs In
A Minor', unveiled tracks including 'Streets Of New York', 'Diary' and the sublime
classic soul of new single 'You Don't Know My Name', which earned her a standing
ovation. Produced by frequent Jay-Z collaborator Kanye West, the track samples
the Main Ingredient track 'Let Me Prove My Love To You' and brings a lush 'What's
Goin' On' era Motown feel to contemporary R&B. Another highlight came with
'Streets Of New York' the recorded version of which features guest spots from
Nas and Rakim and which samples the DJ Premier-produced hip-hop classic 'NY
State Of Mind' from Nas' revered '94 debut 'Illmatic'. The track closes with
a nod to an obvious influence - going out on the chorus from Stevie Wonder's
'Livin' For The City'. Straight after the show Alicia was rushed off to Sarm
Studios in west London to work on the mix of the new album which is due to be
handed in to her label in 10 days. 'The Diary Of Alicia Keys' features two tracks
produced by Kanye West as well as production from Easy Mo Bee, Scott Storch,
Rich Harrison.
:: Alicia Keys talked Schooly of Capital FM in London through her forthcoming

the 1970s and 1980s has on her work. Listen to the interview here.

October 9, 2003 (once again)
:: The New York recording studio where Alicia Keys is finishing up her new album
is as calm and peaceful as she is, with its incense-scented corridors
and flickering votive candles. There is a family feel to the proceedings, as
Keys makes her way through the various rooms, dispensing hugs and how-you-doings
and joking with some of the kids who run in and out. "This is one of my
favorite spots," she says, climbing out a window and surveying the downtown
street three floors below as her legs dangle. It's a scene repeated all over
the city: a pretty New York girl spending a crisp fall afternoon on a fire escape.
Keys, 22, wears jeans, a brown, yellow and cream leather jacket and big ol'
sparkly black earrings. Her mellow smile is confounding: Doesn't she know that
all eyes are on her for the release of her second record? Few debuts were as
celebrated as 2001's Songs in A Minor, but Keys says she isn't feeling the pressure
of a follow-up. When you hear The Diary of Alicia Keys, due out in December,
you'll know why. It's a stunner, a blend of hip-hop with warmth and feeling
("Streets of New York" is an affectionate ode to her hometown, opened
and closed by Nas and Rakim) as well as instant soul classics that invoke the
best of Seventies AM radio. The single "You Don't Know My Name" even
revives the good old spoken interlude, in a phone call to a crush, which she
did in one take ("I feel kind of silly doing this, but this is the waitress
from the coffeehouse...the one with the braids"). "I'm so excited
about this album," she says. "I feel like it's the first time all
over again." Read
more in here! And click on image to enlarge it!
:: I've put new AKeys adoptions, some animated images
just for real fans lol
:: Finally audio section is working now, so you can

:: I was right, Alicia Keys has pushed back the release date of her forthcoming
set "The Diary Of Alicia Keys", to December 2. The singer postponed
the album's release back in order to coordinate touring plans. Keys explained
the move in a released statement. She said: "It is very important to me
to spend more time on the road playing for my fans. In order to make it to all
the cities I wanted to play, we needed to extend the schedule, therefore the
release date has changed. I love my album and can't wait to share my music with
the people that have been so supportive from the beginning." The Diary
Of Alicia Keys will feature the production of Keys, her writing partner, Kerri
Brothers, and Kanye West. The set will also feature guest appearances from Missy
Elliott, Nas, and Rakim. One song from the set, "Streets Of New York"
featuring Nas and Rakim, has already been leaked. The singer shared her thoughts
on the song with Billboard, saying: "Havin' Nas and Rakim together with
me on one record is crazy. It's something so special and just truly unforgettable
for me personally and anybody who grew up livin' and lovin' hip-hop. We were
all born and raised in New York. This represents NYC! To me this is a New York
anthem." Other tracks that will appear on the set include "If I Ain't
Got You," "If I Was Your Woman," "You Don't Know My Name"
and "Diary." Missy Elliott appears on an unidentified cut. Keys' "Someday
We'll All Be Free" is among the exclusive tracks on the forthcoming "Sessions@AOL"
compilation, due Oct. 14 via Atlantic. She's also due to guest star on a second
season episode of NBC's nostalgic family drama "American Dreams."

:: Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, former Pink Floyd main man Roger Waters
and Alicia Keys will judge the Sir Charles Blues Lab Songwriting Contest, which
gives teens the chance to record with fellow judge Ray Charles. Songs will be
judged for originality, adherence to the blues form, subject matter and lack
of profanity. Five lyricists will win trips to Los Angeles to work with Charles,
a longtime supporter of the charity. Runners-up can win a guitar autographed
by Britney Spears (news) or a bass lesson from Flea, both also keen benefactors
of the charity. In addition, 10 schools or community centers submitting more
than 20 entries (one per student) will be randomly picked to receive equipment
for their music programs. For more information, visit the Blues Lab's Web site
here.

:: Missy Elliott has proven herself to be nothing if not prolific throughout
her career. Just a year after releasing one of her most successful albums, Under
Construction, Missy's ready to do it again with This Is Not a Test, due November
25. Its first single, "Pass the Dutch," hints at Missy's penchant
for old-school allusions. Although the album is still being recorded, another
song expected to represent is "Wake Up," featuring Jay-Z. Also expected
to appear on the album are Alicia Keys, R. Kelly and Busta Rhymes. There could
be more guests, though, as Missy is known for her surprises.

:: For all the heads who embraced the cool, blast-from-the-past aesthetic
of Alicia Keys when she dropped Songs in A Minor back in 2001: you ain't heard
nothing yet. On her forthcoming, as-yet untitled sophomore release, set for
December, Alicia Keys promises to delve even deeper into her classic soul sensibilities,
and with even more confidence and maturity. And thats all based on three
songs previewed by VIBE Online on Friday (Sept. 19). The smooth "You Don't
Know My Name" finds Keys imagining a budding romance with a man she's only
seen but never approached. The lush, layered backing vocals, from a mixed-gender
ensemble, on this track ride atop absolutely vintage instrumentation from a
full band. It's this production quality that immediately distinguishes the new
material from her debut, whose sample-driven beats have given way to something
much more organic. Youre engaged in the romance immediately as a spoken-word
telephone conversation between Keys, who describes herself as the waitress with
braids from the diner at 39th and Lenox, and her potential lover takes place.
While listening to "You Don't Know My Name," one can't help but recall
Gladys Knight and her brave yet silky cuts of the early- to mid-70s. So when
the second track turns out to be a cover of Gladys' classic, "If I Were
Your Woman," the homage continues. Kicking off with a tweaky sample of
the original's signature hook, the track finds Keys showing off some welcome
development in her voice; she's always been superbly emotive in her delivery,
but there's newfound wisdom and a worn-in quality about her vocals this time
around. G-Unit's Lloyd Banks guests with a little flow towards the end. "If
I Ain't Got You" opens with Keys tickling keys (pun intended), the only
time in these three tracks where the piano prodigy's skills are spotlighted.
While retaining the live-band sound of the other two cuts, this one's a bit
more stripped down, allowing Keys' pipes to do their thing alongside even more
soothing backup vocals and subtle hints of brassy horns. If these three cuts
are any indication, Alicia Keys is sticking to her roots and then some. When
other contemporaries work songs around the latest bit of slang or the hot producers
of the moment, Keys appears to put musicianship first, from the superb, big-sounding
orchestration to the classy, timeless vocal arrangements. The full album will
be ready for Christmas, but these three samples will test our patience. (Story
by Peter Gaston). Click on the foto to see bigger size!

:: Alicia Keys showcased her new album 'The Diary of Alicia Keys' on Mondayin
an intimate gig in New York. "It almost feels like the first time again
in a way, because this is the first time of me as I am today," Keys told
Radio 1. "I feel like I was supposed to be doing music in the 60s and 70s,
so a lot of times I think you'll hear those influences in my music. It's definitely
mixed in with all the hip-hop that I grew up with, the classical, and all the
different styles of music that I love. I'm proud of it, and I'm ready to come
to Europe, so let's do the damn thing!"

:: Steve Jones of USA Today chatted with fans online on Tuesday and was asked
about what he knows regarding Alicia Keys' forthcoming album. "I have not
yet heard the music, though I have been told that her album due in November
will be stronger than her first," he said. "She is a genuine musician
and has her own vision about her art, so I would expect her to put out something
of quality. I would not, however, expect it to match her first record's phenomenal
sales (though they should be strong) or five Grammy awards." Read
