> "I was in the car
and got this call from my manager, and I was like,'Huh? That can't be true!'
I was praying to God that it was a terrible rumor. Aaliyah's death had such
an impact on me because even though I never met her, I believe you can get an
idea of the essence of a person's spirit through her music and image - and I
felt that her spirit was so good. She was strong - she had her own ideas on
what she wanted to wear and how she wanted to be represented. She always did
things a little differently. And she was so inspiring. I aspired to be an artist
around the same time she had already releasedan album, so she made it a reality,
a realistic and attainable goal for me. Aaliyah inspired me not only to continue
being an artist but to be an individual - no matter who you are or what you
do, be your own person, love who you are, and be proud of that. I feel she departed
in a good space, in the sense of where her mind was and where she was in life.
She was happy and free, and her spirit is flying."
--Alicia Keys.

> Grammy-winner Keys sings
soul out to sparse audience. Sure, it was only a Tuesday night, but you'd think
soul traditionalist sensation Alicia Keys would still sell out the Orpheum theater.
Come on, she tied a record by winning five Grammies, all this year, and she's
just 21. Her debut and Grammy-winning record (Best R&B Album), "Songs
in A Minor," was a No. 1 disc. Yet Keys played to a house only two-thirds
full. Read

entrance Sunday at GM Place, and she pulled it off without the aid of a theatrical
gimmick or special effect. Keys, quite simply, is loved. Riding high on the
release of a single, albeit multi-Grammy-winning album, the young artist has
gained a devoted 20-something audience with her sophisticated mix of new R &
B, soul and hip hop. Read

on whether the two are an item. "We met in L.A. for lunch, and she basically
said she liked where I was at musically and thought it would be dope if we write
together," Timberlake said. "Of course, I was flattered. She's an
incredible prodigy and likes to do stuff that feels good to her. I can appreciate
that, because I'm in the same spot." The two do hope to write together
soon, but they have no immediate plans to record or perform together.

> Alicia Keys has gone against
the grain of most of her celebrity counterparts by refusing to use bodyguards
while wandering the streets of New York. The singer, 21, prefers to spend her
downtime alone when she's in her home city's Central Park or on the subway -
shunning the obligatory star entourage of bodyguards, assistants and fame-seeking
friends. Her mother, Terri Augello, says, "Alicia's very unwilling to give
up her right to go and do what she wants. She doesn't like restrictions. If
you don't act grand and attract attention, people don't really get crazy."

> MuchMusic caught up with
Eve to talk about her upcoming album, 'Eve-olution', which she says was done
pretty much on her own. "This album, I did it pretty much by myself. I've
never been in the studio, me by myself making songs," said Eve. "I
think artistically I learned a lot about myself, and I got to experiment a little
more. I think I was less scared then I've been in the past to do different things
with my music. It was cool." As for why she chose Alicia Keys to collaborate
with on the first single "Gangsta Lovin'', Eve said, "It's like why
not. I love Alicia, I think she's incredibly talented and I needed a girl on
a song, and why not Alicia Keys."

> India Arie and Alicia
Keys are set to team up on record - because their hero Stevie Wonder has insisted
they collaborate. The pals met up backstage at Tuesday night's Black Entertainment
Awards in Hollywood and discussed their plans to duet - when Stevie overheard
them. Arie says, "We've spoken about doing it a lot and now we're going
to do that. Stevie Wonder told us we had to, so that's going to happen."
Keys has another all-girl collaboration lined up - she's teaming up with Christina
Aguilera on a track she also co-produced and wrote on the Genie In A Bottle
singer's new album.
> Sexy Alicia is still bombarded
with requests to do flesh-baring photo shoots, despite publicly declaring that
she will never strip. The Fallin' star, 21, constantly faces the persuasion
of over-zealous photographers desperate to be the first to snap her unrobed.
But their persistence has only succeeded in strengthening her stance. She says,
"For me, it really comes along with being conscious of the image I portray.
"Because in situations with different male photographers, they see a young
woman and really just want to see skin. "That's been a battle for me. When
a person is constantly pushing that on you, it gets very, very wearing. You
have to constantly be on the top-top-top of your game."

> A concert in Antigua by
Alicia Keys was canceled because the concert's promoters didn't pay her appearance
fees, her agent said. The concert, scheduled for Friday night, was advertised
as the first of a Caribbean tour. The amount of the contract was reported to
be $60,000. "The promoters ... did not live up to their contractual obligations,"
said Keys' agent, Rob Light of the Beverly Hill-based Creative Artists Agency,
in a letter sent to Antigua Junior Finance Minister Asot Michael. "Their
total disregard for the agreement left us great concern as to the viability
of the production, ticketing, and security," Light said. Concert promoters
in Antigua, Tower Promotions, blamed co-promoters Itchi Baba of Trinidad and
Baby Brother of Miami for the failure to pay. The co-promoters did not say why
they failed to pay. But Itchi Baba manager Al Taylor and Clarence Smith of Baby
Brother said on Thursday in a press release that they approached the government
of Antigua and Barbuda for assistance in salvaging the show. By that time Keys'
management refused to continue with the concert and requested the show be postponed,
the release said. Light said the Antiguan government "has been incredible
in trying to resolve this unfortunate situation" and the government would
like "to try and reschedule (the) show for September."

> Alicia Keys has promised
to deliver "pimped-out vocals" from Christina Aguilera on "Impossible,"
a track she co-produced for Aguilera's upcoming album. On day three of their
sessions at New York's Electric Lady studios last month, Aguilera wasn't looking
like the "big ol' pimp" Keys was boasting her to be. There was no
diamond-encrusted gold goblet or neon three-piece suit with the matching hat
and 'gators. X-tina just sported a cutoff Terry Bradshaw Pittsburgh Steelers
jersey, though her white undershirt did match her pink and white scarf. Aguilera's
nose was stuffy, her eyes were puffy and she was coughing. Obviously her cold
didn't have her much into a game-spitting mood not that she would've been wasting
time shooting the breeze if she were the perfect picture of health. Aguilera
was ready to get down to business and finish the track, which was being produced
by the Krucial Keys team of Alicia and her partner, Kerry Brothers."I like
the piano," a giddy Aguilera said of the slow, chord-driven track Keys
devised to complement her big voice. "Now I gotta learn how to play. You
inspire [me]." Looking low-key in sunshades, a scarf and a leather jacket,
Keys returned the compliment. "I like them vocals," she said. "We're
smashing. Official killer. 'Killer Chris!' " A few minutes later, Keys,
who was orchestrating the session when she wasn't laying background vocals or
harmonizing with her collaborator, sat intently at the boards listening to K.C.
finish the second verse. "'It's impossible to make it easy if you're always
trying to make it so damn haaarrrd,' " the 22-year-old sang."'How
can I, how can I give you all my love, baby/ If you're always, always putting
up your guaaarrrd/ This is not a circus, don'tcha play me for a clown'. Keys
and Aguilera have been wanting to work together for a while, Keys said. Keys
wrote the new cut, but not before the Grammy Award-winners had a chance to vibe
off each other they hung out and partied before Keys penned the track. A tentative
September 17 release date has been set for Aguilera's still-untitled album,
which is the proper follow-up to her 1999 self-titled debut.

she at the time had blamed on people pretending to be her, though constant lesbian
rumors likely played into that decision as well. She also talked about the tour
and her fan club - which appears to be free. Read

> Keys was supposed to do
a mini promo tour for her debut CD 'Songs in A Minor' this week in Brazil but
had her visa turned down. There was no comment on what happened. BMG Brazil
said the promo tour was cancelled and said that the rumors of it being re-scheduled
to next week are false. Next week, Keys will have the rehearsals for the 2nd
leg of her tour starting July 2nd and also will have an appereance on the annual
BET Awards on Tuesday.

with 'American Idol' judge Simon Cowell, known as Mr. Nasty. When asked which
audition song do you never want to hear again, Cowell responded, "R. Kelly's
'I Believe I Can Fly.' Also Alicia Keys' 'Fallin'. "Those are the two.
We almost had to ban them. They are so dreary to listen to, I cannot tell you."

> Karu F. Daniels of EURweb.com
chatted with R&B legend Rick James. Amongst his headline grabbing comments
were those on Alicia Keys. "She calls her album "Songs In A Minor"
and all of the songs are in E and D," he explained. "I don't think
she knows her grammatic skill, personally. I think she's "The Gong Show."
When she did the Donny Hathaway song in front of millions of people and fu**ed
it up, that just goes to show you right there what's going on. What about Rachelle
Ferrell or Lalah Hathaway? What about all these serious bitches that can really
sing? Alicia Keys? Because Clive Davis eats the best See's Candies and gives
the best whatever and wants to show Whitney [Houston] that she ain't sh**, yeah,
he's going to put his effort in Alicia Keys." More?

> The 2nd Annual BET Awards
are quickly approaching and that also means that BET's Viewers' Choice Award
race is on. Without a doubt it's proving to be a pretty unpredictable one. Aaliyah's
"Rock the Boat was in first place just last week but now B2K's "Uh-Huh"
holds the number one spot. Want to know how it breaks down? Leading the charge
with 36.27% of the votes is B2K' s "Uh-Huh" but not far behind Aaliyah
comes in at a close second, (28.42%), with "Rock the Boat." Ja Rule
and Ashanti are third, (17.88%), with "Always On Time." Bow Wow's
"Take Ya Home" is in fourth place with 13.41% while Alicia Keys' "Fallin'",
(4.02%), brings up the rear. This
is the link, click!! Thx to Lauren from AliciAtopia.

> Alicia Keys praised her
mother Terri Augello in an interview with Evelyn McDonnell of the Miami Herald.
"She is a very strong woman: strong-minded, strong-natured," she said.
"She wasn't the type where I would walk in the house and see her defeated
constantly. Even in those types of circumstances, she was always like, OK, let's
get it going. That taught me how to conduct myself as a woman in life."
As for her next album, Keys revealed, "Approaching my next album, I'm so
excited, because I never had to compromise myself for this album, so I know
I won't have to for the next one." Read
more.
> Alicia wrote on her official
website journal last Thursday: "I'm Baaaaaaaccccccck! You see, I decided
to take some time for myself, to just reflect, to hear my mind, my thoughts,
listen to music (ALL kinds, Quincy Jones, Dinah Washington, Fela Kute, Nirvana,
Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Killa Priest) I mean can you FEEL me! :-) I was
zoning out. I read, Alice Walker, DH Lawrence, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison,
just zonin out! For the first time in my ENTIRE life I was alone with my own
thoughts, my own noise in my own head, my own desicions and choices because
I had no other opinion to affect my own, my own silences in my own space. It
was truly a remarkable and eye opening experience. I Have to say, even if I
can only make it to my bathroom to be alone, I promise myself the time to hear
my thoughts, to breath, to focus or re focus. It really leads you to a whole
new understanding of yourself and those around you. It's a beautiful thang!!
Can ya'll feel me!!!".

Keys, LL Cool J, Foxy Brown, Noreaga, Loon, Flipmode Squad, Wu-Tang Clan and
others gave an all-star sheen Tuesday to a massive protest against a proposal
to slash more than $1 billion from the city's education budget. "We are
not just gonna take what we're given," an adamant Alicia Keys said, standing
on a makeshift stage across from City Hall. "We're not gonna take $1.2
billion in cuts. We're worth more than that". "I'm a New York City
resident, born and raised here," she explained before going up to speak
to the sea of onlookers. "When I was in school we were fighting the same
fights against budget cuts. Once again they constantly want to take from the
system of education, from schools, from the people that are going to be the
future. I'm out here to show my support that we're not going to accept this".

Child, *NSYNC singer Justin Timberlake, and rapper Nelly have made new public-service
announcements (PSAs) for YouthAIDS, an organization that informs and educates
15-to-24-year-olds about the dangers of HIV and AIDS. The PSAs present AIDS
statistics and offer hope for future generations against the background music

Statistics noting that nearly 6,000 young people are infected with HIV every
day, and that half of all new infections are occurring among the world's 15-to-24
year olds, are presented in the spots. The PSAs also direct viewers to the website
youthAIDS.org to learn more about the disease, and the opportunities to contribute
to the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS. Through the effective use of theatre,
media, music, fashion, and sport,YouthAIDS promotes abstinence, decreased sexual
activity, and safer sex to teenagers around the world. Thx to Lauren for this
