Alicia Keys: The other first lady
June 14, 2013
Midnight on Alicia Keys’ tour bus, and the talk - as it is so often with visiting American superstars - is of Nando’s. ‘Everyone freaks out over it!’ exclaims the singer who has sold 30 million albums and won endless Grammys. ‘I gotta get the Nando’s!’ Perhaps when she plays the O2 two days after our meeting, a banquet of peri-peri chicken will be top of her rider.
It’s fair to say she’s used to a higher class of catering, especially when dining with her Washington associates. Keys counts Barack and Michelle as friends (she played at last year’s presidential inauguration, changing the chorus of her recent smash ‘Girl on Fire’ to ‘Obama’s on fire!’), their connection forged by a shared interest in philanthropy, notably in the area of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria. Later this year, NY hosts the 10th anniversary outing of Keys’ Black Ball, a gala that has raised over $15 milllion in charitable funds. ‘I very much connect with Michelle and we’ve done different things together that have given us so much to talk about - she’s really interested in girls and empowerment too.’
Tonight, though, we are in Nottingham, bound for London. The tour bus engine idles while Team Keys assembles hot drinks - a fragrant concoction for the workaholic star of the show, who’s now swaddled in a jersey and scarf. ‘Mmm, it’s good!’ she shouts, drumming her hands on the table in delight. ‘It has ghee, cardamom, turmeric, all these yummy Indian spices,’ she explains. ‘And a little bit of almond milk. It’s delicious. It’s supposed to be relaxing. And it does help everything - skin, throat…’

Tears Always Win Video Premiere
June 14, 2013
Alicia Keys has debuted music video for "Tears Always Win". The video opens with Keys waking up alone in her motel room in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old singer then heads to her first workplace, where she does her job as a dancer in a Vegas nightclub.
She keeps singing about loneliness and lost love as she ditches her feathery costume and transforms into a lounge singer. Accompanied by some backing singers, Keys plays the piano and sings the emotional ballad in front of some guests.
"It's a girl and her working two jobs and she's got all these things going on," Keys told MTV last month of the story behind her new music video. "But the whole time, she's totally distracted because she's only thinking about how she feels [about her ex], almost at the point [where] you're thinking about the person, but you're also thinking about, kind of, your loneliness and how you feel. How're you gonna get through it?"
"The video is totally beautiful, really unexpected. It has some Vegas pieces in it. I think the way it goes on, it really brings a relevance to the words and you'll really feel it. I'm loving it".
Produced by Jeff Bhasker and written by Keys and Bruno Mars, "Tears Always Win" is the fifth single off Keys' fifth studio album, "Girl on Fire". Watch it now!

Alicia Keys talks looking out for Rihanna: 'I'm proud of her'
June 12, 2013
Alicia Keys revealed that she is always concerned when stars younger than her are put under intense public scrutiny, but is "proud" of the way Rihanna has handled the spotlight.
"It's such a tricky, crazy business, and when people are a little bit younger than me, I'm always hoping that their soul is good 'cause it can be such a soulless space," Keys told this Friday's issue of Evening Standard Magazine.
"I'm proud of Rihanna, because it's not easy to stand up in this crazy world and make it and keep going and try new things, and find your way through it."
Keys also spoke of her relationship with US First Lady Michelle Obama and how she admires her mission to highlight female empowerment.
"I very much connect with Michelle and we've done different things together that have given us so much to talk about - she's really interested in girls and empowerment too."
The full interview with Alicia Keys will be published in this Friday's issue of ES Magazine, which is available in the London Evening Standard.

Alicia Keys is Marie Claire UK’s hot July cover star
June 5, 2013
Alicia has been chosen to front Marie Claire UK’s July issue, and we think it’s about time this ultra-talented songstress got some fashion glossy recognition. Alicia looks sensational in each and every one of her editorial pictures, and from the sneaky snippets we read, her interview is pretty hot too! She opens up to Marie Claire about her foray into directing, motherhood, and of course, her husband Swizz.
“I think we’ve taught each other a lot. He’s taught me to live more fully and I think I’ve taught him to live more deeply.
“Swizz will have the fastest car, the biggest jewellery, the loudest jacket; everything with him is really over the top. I used to see him and think, ‘he is so annoying’. You have to speak up. To say, ‘I don’t like that, it’s not cool, don’t do that to me’, but it’s not easy, especially with people you love.
“I think getting older has made me evolve in a lot of ways and made me more relaxed about saying how I feel, no matter what.”

Alicia Keys to Perform in Israel Despite Boycott Calls
June 1, 2013
Alicia Keys announced Friday that she plans to go ahead with her scheduled July 4 concert in Tel Aviv, despite calls to cancel the show for political reasons.
“I look forward to my first visit to Israel. Music is a universal language that is meant to unify audiences in peace and love, and that is the spirit of our show” Keys said in a statement.
On Wednesday, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and activist Alice Walker, a prominent American supporter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, asked Keys to cancel her upcoming Tel Aviv concert appearance.
In an open letter posted online, Walker wrote that Keys was putting herself in “soul danger” by performing in “an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists. You were not born when we, your elders who love you, boycotted institutions in the US South to end an American apartheid less lethal than Israel’s against the Palestinian people.”
The debate over Keys’s appearance in Israel has branched out to social media, with Israel supporters launching multiple Facebook pages in support of her arrival, only to be countered by pro-BDS campaigns.
“I’m excited to go to new places on this tour, among them Tel Aviv. I plan on bringing with me a show full of emotion and inspiration,” Keys said when the concert was announced.

Alicia Keys at The Echo Arena Concert Review
May 19, 2013
Alicia Keys blazed a trail with a world-class performance worthy of a goddess on the first night of her UK tour in Liverpool.
A giant white canvas dominated the stage before bursting into colour, filled with projections of the Brooklyn Bridge with purple, pink and piercing blue lights swirling across the audience to announce the arrival of the Girl On Fire.
Alicia appeared on a raised stage donning a dark fedora encrusted with sparkling diamantes and surrounded by four male backing dancers. As she strode centre stage she exuded grace and elegance with an old money New York look, which fits perfectly with The Great Gatsby style currently riding high in the fashion stakes.
Alicia opened proceedings with one of her fierce breakup songs Karma, which put the gathered throng of mostly female fans at Liverpool Arena, in the mood. She showed her prowess on the black and ivory keys, warming the crowd into sing along mode with her classic You Don't Know My Name. A special treat was a mash-up of the James Bond theme with Woman's Worth, featuring an energetic routine from her male dancers in secret agent style suits. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra provided the background music as the S-Class carried its first passenger onto the stage - Alicia Keys. BlackBerry Scholars Program Announced by Alicia Keys
May 14, 2013
Alicia Keys, the Global Creative Director, announced the BlackBerry Scholars Program, a four-year scholarship that’ll be available to outstanding female students around the world.
“It’s clear we need to elevate more women to leadership roles,” Keys said.
She pointed out some startling disparities between men and women in the technology industry: Even though more women earn college degrees than men, only 5 percent of women lead startups, 56 percent leave the technology industry after entering it, and women make up only 11 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs. While the BlackBerry scholarship won’t immediately fix these systemic problems, it’s an effort to level the playing field a bit.
“The Program is designed to help increase the number of women in the fields of study influencing the future of mobile computing, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and particularly those with an interest and/or aptitude in the mobile computing space.”
“This is more than just a scholarship, this is the beginning of a powerful network of women” Alicia said.
Women who are interested in the program and are entering their first year of study in the 2013-2014 academic year can apply for the program by June 26th.
Find out more on it here.

The Smokey Show: An Intimate Sit-Down With Alicia Keys
May 10, 2013
I’ve had the opportunity to interview a lot of talented people. But there’s something different about Alicia.
Maybe it’s her humility or her warmth, but Alicia’s immense talent doesn’t intimidate. In fact, it does the exact opposite. It engages you, forces you to willingly open yourself.
Alicia was the first to cover my former publication america magazine, and while the talent was undeniable then, neither was her humility. She graced the covers of GIANT magazine, not once, but twice. Each time more tenured and with quite a few awards and No. 1 hits under her belt. But unlike her musical counterparts, the 14-time Grammy award winner didn’t let the success get to her head. She was still humble. Still Alicia.
Now, with the release of her fifth studio album “Girl On Fire” Alicia and I sat down once again after her HelloBeautiful performance at Harlem’s Red Rooster and we talked, just like we did so many times before. We talked about being a new mom, a new wife and of course her new music. For Alicia, it was a brand new day, a brand new beginning.
But through it all, traces of the young girl, rockin’ braids from Hell’s Kitchen were still present. Eager and zealous to express herself in the best musical way possible.
Despite all the growth and worldwide success she was still humble. Still Alicia.

Alicia Keys Drops "New Day" Music Video: Watch Here!
May 1, 2013
Just when we'd finished sweating (and drooling) over Alicia Keys and Maxwell's steamy love affair in their "Fire We Make" video, one week later, Alicia has unveiled a bold and high-energy new video for the Swizz Beatz-produced single "New Day," the latest from 2012's Girl On Fire.
In the Indrani-directed video, Alicia hits the streets of New York City where she saunters in exceptionally high heels, meets up with some dancer/model/graffiti artist pals and spray paints the walls with the lyrics to "New Day."
Just as we're settling into NYC's back alleys, "New Day" cuts to Alicia performing at iTunes Festival (last year in London), where she's straight up nailing her choreography. Is this video as, say, "after-hours appropriate" as "Fire We Make"? Nah, but at least this is one you can safely watch at work without feeling sad you're sleeping alone tonight. Thanks for that, Alicia!

Mom / R&B singer Alicia Keys walks a virtual tightrope
April 19, 2013
During a run of a couple of weeks in February, it seemed you couldn't turn on a major sporting event without seeing Alicia Keys.
Super Bowl national anthem? Check. And with a complicated, jazzy arrangement, no less.
Halftime at the NBA All-Star game? Yep, there she was sitting at her piano for "Empire State of Mind," then ripping through a medley of hits, including "No One" and "Girl on Fire," the title track of her fifth studio album, released last fall.
And while burying herself in these high-prep, high-stress appearances, Keys was also planning a major international arena tour that stops Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit and continues through July.
Her career has been filled with accolades - 14 Grammy Awards and a distinction as the top-selling R&B artist in 2001, the year her 12-million-selling "Songs in A Minor," arrived.
Now the wife and mother was a little frazzled at the idea of touring for the first time with these new responsibilities.
Here's what else the always-and-forever East Coast-er had to say before she went on tour:
You haven't done a major arena tour in a few years, so what are the challenges of bringing your very intimate music into these large venues?
Over the years, I've discovered how to fit into the smallness of it, and I find that even in these big spaces, when it gets to be the simple moment, it's still poignant.
What type of production elements will be in play?
I feel like it's a nice balance. It's always based in the music and on my baby, which is the piano — that centers the whole thing. But I want to enhance the story around it. What I really wanted to do was create an experience that goes beyond the emotional experience you can get musically and also get a visual-emotional experience.
Growing up in New York, did you get to MSG for a lot for concerts? Was there ever anything or anyone that you saw as a kid and thought, "I want to do that one day"?
Seeing Prince at the Garden - that was ridiculously crazy! And being really little and seeing Michael Jackson, though that might have been Nassau Coliseum. Then I remember some of my favorite boy bands, New Edition or New Kids on the Block - that was amazing. I'll never forget this one time I saw Wu Tang Clan. They came on stage and got the whole audience to sing, "Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang," and I thought, "That's gonna be me one of these days."
This is your first tour as a mom. Are you worried about how you'll balance things?
I can't lie. I've been having some moments. Sometimes in life, with working mothers and working people, there are moments where you have a good flow, and then there are moments when you can't see the end of the day. That's kinda where I am right now. Literally, in the morning when my son wakes up, I'll have 30 minutes with him. I might see him before he goes to bed, and it does get to you. Fortunately, my mother and my husband's dad's mom are out with him now. But it's going to be an adventure. I have no idea how it's going to turn out.
Check out pictures from the show at Joe Louis Arena
in Detroit below.

Alicia shares an intimate moment from behind the scenes of her “Set The World on Fire” tour

Alicia Keys: Family Life makes me honest
April 19, 2013
Alicia Keys is more honest about her feelings now she is a wife and mother.
The 'Girl on Fire' hitmaker - who has son Egypt, two, with husband Swizz Beats - says family life has made her more sure of herself and more comfortable than ever on stage.
She said: ''Stepping into motherhood and becoming a wife, I've definitely become more confident. I can express my feelings more honestly. When you're trying to find your way, you hold so much back. Now that wall has gone, I've really stepped into myself. I am able to be more vulnerable and more composed. I just feel calm and comfortable with the shows now.
Alicia married Swizz three years ago, and says it was ''divine'' to realise she had a ''beautiful connection'' with her former school friend.
She added in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''Strangely enough we've known each other for 12 years - since high school. Years later, realising we had a beautiful connection together was just divine.''
Keys also admits it was her producer spouse who first made her think seriously about having children. She said: ''It's made everything a deeper, fuller experience in every way. I'd thought about it before but it wasn't really on my radar until I met the love of my life.''
